Orienteering race 54:00 [3] 2.6 mi (20:46 / mi)
shoes: OROC

The MIddle course at NAOC. Since I was walking this very technical course became much easier. My only significant error was on control 6 when I drifted right and had to slow down to figure out where I was. Otherwise knew where I was Lon he map. Competitively Imwas quite surprised to be in the top hanf of the Brown B course. I guess most of the runners were making errors. Avoided the rain while out on the course, but it poured about 30 minutes after finishing. Got to see many old friends and fellow competitors. Geat woods, great courses, wonderful organization. DVOA has set a standard that will be hard to match.

Orienteering 1:45:00 [1] 2.6 mi (40:23 / mi)
shoes: OROC

At NAOC. Walked the Model event with Leslie. Nice forest except for a few viney areas. Seemed pretty easy while slowly walking and picking out feature. See what happens tomorrow with the pressure of competition.

Morning walk with Charlie, Rhonda and Sassy on trails through the woods. Beautiful morning, everything perfect.

Running 13:32 [4] 1.0 mi (13:32 / mi)
shoes: OROC

Leslie has been encouraging me to run a comtinous mile. so after getting back to the hooise I donned my O shoes and running shorts we went back into the woods to see if I could complete it. After the first .4 miles I wasn't sure if I could finish. But with Sassy leading the way And Leslie following I gutted it out in 13:32. HR reached 127 about two minutes after finishing. With the heart pounding I did another 200m sprint back to the house.

Orienteering 23:54 [3] 1.09 mi (21:56 / mi)
shoes: OROC

This afternoon ran/walked a sprint course that Charlie had set on his property. Quite fun and good practice for the weekend. Made two significany errors. The first of about 1 minute when I mistakened unmapped rocks for the control boulder cluster. the second of about 2 minutes on control 5 when I took a risky route through thick woods instead of following the paths. Was able to run a bit of the trails. This evening another great dinner from Rhonda, plus some interesting conversation about Italy, Guido Brunetti and family,

Walking 39:00 [1] 1.7 mi (22:56 / mi)
shoes: Adidas Kanada

Drove through PA, NY and CT to Charlie & Rhonda Deweese's place. Gorgeous drive through peak foliage. Although Charlie was at a business meeting in Washington, Rhona took us on a hike around their acreage. Beautiful woods, marshes, a lake with Blue Heron nests and beaver dams. it was great to see this fabulous place after years of hearing about it.

Walked the DVOA 90 minute Score O at Camp Delmont. First time on this map. Mostly nice forest with a few areas of viney, steep and rocky ground. I started out visiting the northern half of map but soon realized that the terrain was probably much more runnable in the South. So I looped back around and got all the controls on the southern half. Of course score-o events are always compromised by the lack of any long technical legs. So I didn't get too much out of the session. I did make 2 significant errors. The first was early, precipitated by a fall in the rocks. (Only a scratch or two.). This made me tentative to follow the route I had chosen and tried to go around the rest of the rocks. But the rocks extended further than mapped, so I ended up overshooting the control boulders. The second error was on a flat plateau towards the end of the course. I had come to realize that many of the mapped paths were overgrown. but when I reached this area there were no contours or other features to key on so I wandered for a few minutes until I found a point I could identify. This is the first time since starting back that my mind played tricks on me, as I desperately tried to match the terrain to a place on the map. Good practice to get calmed down in this situation.
Nice to see some of the old DVOA buddies after so long. We had some good time talking to Wyatt and Angelica and their now preteen kids.
Drove 4 hours to Wellsboro, PA. cute town.

Walking 4:00:00 [2] 8.0 mi (30:00 / mi)
shoes: Adidas Kanada

Walked about 4 hours around Philadelphia. Leslie h ad never been there and I not since the 60's. The final 2 hours was a great tour of the downtown by a young guy who started a company giving free tours. (He lives on tips.)
Loved the Reading Market and City Hall.
