Discovered a few days ago that The Golden Girls (Susy and Connie) were starting an orienteering group at Fort Leavenworth. So we got up at the udgodly hour of 5:30 for an 8:00 mass start. It was weird to be on a USGS map (blown up to 1:15). (edit: There is an old (30+ years) orienteering map of the fort, which I had been on about 15 years ago. Access to the Fort has been limited since 9/11, so we haven't updated the map). Took me a while to adjust to the general nature of the map. Also, they had fun "hiding" the controls (behind signs, low to the ground, or high in the air). Most of the control locations were historical sites, which was fun. I took it easy, walking most of the way, with a few bouts of jogging when the wind got too cold. Lots of fun. Nice to have Mean Gene and Ulrik with us, too. My route.

Whheee! This was fun. Great to be riding a bike again, great to be out in eighty degree weather. I had gotten my bike tuned up over the winter, so tonight it felt like I was riding, um, a well-oiled machine :) Super fun.
Day Two ISIC Champs: some things that went well today:
1. no serious injuries
2. the PTOC and OK volunteers all kicked ass!!
3. the rain held off for another day
4. Valerie and Sandy continued their awesome results job, allowing the award ceremony to start on time
5. All equipment was out of the woods, accounted for and cleaned by 4:00
One thing that didn't go well:
someone vandalized my car
