Note

A fun visit with Anna and John, who stopped over on the drive east. Very encouraging to see how excited and motivated they both are about orienteering. Now I just have to convince Anna to apply to Cornell...

orienteer race 1:38:00 [3] *** 5.52 km (17:45 / km)

Day Two at the US Champs did not go as well. I was not reading the map in advance, just reacting to what I saw. And then came control 2.

It was tricky and a lot of folks missed it. I din't mind that I missed it the first time. I do mind that I wandered first, then finally relocated, three times, before I found it. I should have stopped and relocated immediately; instead I wasted 15 minutes. Still need to work on this !!!!!

At least I settled down after that, and started to read the map. The rest of the course was slow, with some stupid route choices (like taking the eastern stream to #4, instead of the western one) but no big bobbles. Still sucking wind the whole way.

At least the finish was downhill today, so I had some fun sprinting in at the end. And a first: climbing a ladder on the way to the start! Very fun and unique.

Day one at the US Champs, and I survived. Breathing was heavy, and sounded funny, even as I walked. However, the navigation was pretty clean. Missed #7, in all the rocks, the first time. But I quickly stopped and relocated. I got a bit of help from the pack of runners who found the control at the same time, but I was pleased that I stoppped as soon as I wasn't sure where I was. That's what I'm suppossed to do.

I finished in the middle of the pack of women on the green course, which is just where I hoped to be.

Note

Flying off to the US Champs today. My only goal is to survive the altitude and hills. I'm tired from too much traveling, and slightly out of O practice, so I'm not terribly motivated. But I haven't missed a US Champs since I started orienteering, so off I go.
