As David and I were walking along a trail from 11 to 12 yesterday, David suddenly stopped and pointed at a little water hole with a distinctive tree on the far side, its roots wrapped around a large stone. He recognized it from this image I found on images.google (searched "Blue Hills") last year, and which he used as inspiration for last year's Traverse T-shirt. It was so cool that he saw this place for the first time in real life, and instantly recognized it, a year after last seeing the photo.

Stayed up way too late watching the second half of Pride & Prejudice, twice. What a great production, and such a handsome Mr. Darcy! It's the 1995 made-for-TV version starring Colin Firth, and runs a satisfying 310 minutes for the whole series. Very faithful to the book. I am afraid this is one of my favorite books evah. The DVD was a bit scratched or something so we will get a better copy from Netflix and watch it again to see the scenes we missed.

Event: Blue Hills Traverse
 

actually remembered to send in money for WRC 2010... At this point I'm not sure that John will be going (it's a lot of money for someone not employed), and I'm also not sure that I will be going (it's a lot of time for someone employed and parenting), but I hope to go.

Blue Hills Traverse, with David. I'm proud of him for completing his first long event.

Orienteering with David hasn't been all that successful. We did most of the Little Blue Hills Traverse quite a few years ago, along with Rachael and Isabel. At Pawtuckaway this year I invited David to do some long course with me but he bailed after a few controls. I took both Isabel and David on an orange course recently and it was sometimes unpleasant. But I always am willing to try again. And I knew David was physically capable, after the cross-country season.

The plan was to go at an easy slow pace. One problem at Pawtuckaway was that we started out too fast.

David seemed very somber and serious before the race started. He said later he was nervous and focused on what was coming. Maybe he felt self-conscious. I asked later, after reading Peter's post, whether he was feeling like he didn't want to be there, and he said probably part of him didn't want to be there. Dave said David wouldn't answer Peter's friendly questions, but David said he did answer one, and might not have heard others. David also said he would not have deliberately ignored someone.

Things started off OK, if slowly. Thanks to Jeff saying we could avoid the swamp, we went around to the left. It took us a long time on that first leg before we figured out where we were, like 12 minutes. I think I was thrown by not seeing the swamp on the map.

Fairly early on I found myself in the lead, feeling that David was walking too slowly. I said something to him about needing to go steadily, and he responded with hostility. I told him that bothered me and could he not do that, and so then he was polite and friendly. (!) There was one burst of swearing after a fall. I told him PG did that too, but with more falling and less swearing per fall.

David talked some about all the productive things he could be doing if he weren't spending all day orienteering.

He was following the map a lot of the time. Toward the end when he was worried abut finishing before the 3:30 time limit, he picked up the pace.

We saw 3 young people I figured were AR types, near the beginning where we finally figured out where we were, and then again at the very end.

Course setter Ross did a fine job of keeping us mostly out of thick stuff.

It sure was nice to see Jeff with water & treats part way through, and Ross & Samantha at the finish.

Tonight's Global History homework is about the European colonization in Africa. We read about the differences between French assimilation (which didn't actually last long) and British indirect rule, and how the two systems pretty much felt the same to the exploited wage laborer... Us humans appear to be very very good at using other humans without regard for their happiness.

Took a look at POM 2010 in February in Portugal...
