Orienteering 7:40:00 [3]

Hudson Highlander.

I enjoyed learning a little from Will about economics on the drive to Harriman. Unemployment, free trade, health insurance...

Between controls 2 & 3, on the hillside just above that huge pile of stones on the northwest side of the stream to the right of the purple line, I riled up a bees' nest and was stung half a dozen times.

Dave wanted to travel together for this Highlander, which was way nice.

Bicycling 30:00 [3]

To school this morning for a meeting with 5th grade teacher Kristina. We recapped the orienteering trip we did with her class last year, and made a plan to do it again in a couple weeks. I had forgotten exactly what we'd done and was pleasantly surprised. Teams prepared ahead of time - not only together but also assigned roles and the people doing the same role also got together for some training. We made a few tweaks to improve it.

On the way out I stopped by to thank Linda (grade 1/2 teacher) for the lovely collage thank you cards I got from each and every one of her students. She started hinting that I ought to work up to taking the entire school to the woods in the beginning of each year, and have the grades work together more meaningfully than just passing in the woods (and exchanging tokens). That got me kind of excited. As I may have mentioned before, I love the idea of a dozen busses dropping hundreds of kids off, and then the forest just absorbs them - and all the people driving by have no idea that the fells are full of children. And the kids all know what they're doing and have a great time.

And in the fantasy I start a club at the high school too, seeded with some of the kids who went to Graham and Parks for K-8 and orienteered with me there. And then a few stars emerge and go on to national fame. I guess the Seattle area has that going.

Bicycling 40:00 [1]

to school to drop off david's forgotten lunch. work and back.

Note

17-point plan (aka Boiling Frog): There were a few days that I did not record the points, but here is the data for what I have. In particular, I didn't record much in the last few crazy weeks.

You can see that some things came along more slowly than others. X axis is day with any data.
