Great Ski Race. The race email that went out yesterday said the course had three 500m bare spot that we'd have to run. Plus it was going to snow a foot or two overnight which was going to groom up fantastically in time for the race. So I decided a serious sandbagging effort was in order. Took the crappy ski-o skis with last weekend's wax on them. Was a little bit regretting it for the first part, as the climb and most of the descent was totally clean snow, if a bit super punchy, and I was getting dusted by anybody on real skis. Then the last 10km happened and I felt better: it all degraded into a B+ ski-o trail. It was bumpy and muddy and off camber and there were random washout holes that dropped a couple feet. Passed a bunch of people who looked like they were trying to figure out what to do about the 200m of mud in front of the second food station (double pole through it), and another couple people who were trying to go around the 100m of ankle deep puddles after that (double pole through it), and the part with the pine tree needles was totally trained for in Germany. Helen caught up from wave two at the top of the hill and started trash talking about how fast her wax was, then immediately bit it on a corner and never caught back up. Apparently normal people don't ski bumpy trails. Anyway good fun, and I feel totally justified in not trying too hard.
