mtn bike 58:50 [3] 9.56 mi (9.7 mph) +203m

Over the weekend the fire stopped and it got all stormy and then snowed a bunch. Nothing left, but its quite nice out for a change.

orienteering 2:02:05 [3] 12.49 km (9:46 / km) +676m 7:41 / km

This was more fun than yesterday, mostly because it was probably less interesting terrain, so I could dislike it while having a nice grassy ridge run.

Saw a couple vultures circling on the way to one of the early controls, then saw a couple in a tree, then came over the top of the spur and saw 30+ of them in a pile having a vulture-fest. Fresh deer carcass on the hillside, right about where I wanted to run by. I dodged it by a little bit, which seemed to disperse many of the vultures, and I was hoping I seemed less exciting than the dead stuff. That might have been fun for the later starters once the mountain lions got a whiff of it.

orienteering 2:30:23 [3] 13.36 km (11:15 / km) +784m 8:42 / km

A-meet at Calero park in San Jose. Boo. I don't really like SF terrain.

On an unrelated note, we have come up with the greatest quasi-orienteering spinoff sport ever. World-wide coordinated parking lot maze-o. Those little streamer-maze micro sprints that are all the rage these days. Since there's no real "terrain" needed, identical mazes can be created in multiple locations all over the country and world on the same day. Everybody around the world runs the same course, Truckee gets -10 seconds for altitude, then all the results are combined on the internet. A full season of races every weekend at whatever 'real' orienteering is going on. Simultaneous live internet streaming of each venue. Head to head throwdowns. Beef Jerky and Budweiser tailgate sponsor parties. It'll be glorious. Tell ESPN to send my checks to the home address.

mtn bike 57:44 [3] 9.5 mi (9.9 mph) +191m

Woot no smoke! Got some rain yesterday, and the wind is going the other direction, so its pretty nice outside for a change. Its also 30 degrees, so I almost bit it on an icy wooden bridge.

mtn bike 28:47 [3] 4.4 mi (9.2 mph) +91m

It looked only half bad out there this morning, so I got out for a quick ride before it either got smokier or got rainier. Lots of wind out there though. Looks like we're in for a couple days of storms, which will help put out the current fires, but will probably also start a few more...
