We spent the day at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, looking at lots of fishes. It didn't seem as epic as the Baltimore aquarium (or at least what I remember of it), but it was still pretty awesome. In anticipation of such awesomesauce, I had rented some bonus camera toys (a 6D and the 100 macro), which I'd been looking for an excuse to play with for a while just to try out.
I managed to take lots of pictures, more GB than fit on my hard drive, so it'll take a bit to get them all sorted out. I took jpg+raw, so I might just post the jpg ones and then try to figure out how to work with raw for the good ones later. What am I supposed to use to mess with those?
The 6D definitely feels better than my camera, maybe just because its bigger and easier to hold. I think it also focuses better. Also the lens ranges I already have make a lot more sense on the full frame sensor than on my crop one, to the point that they're actually useful close up.
The macro lens is pretty sexy for certain things, and about on par for others. The super close focusing part is pretty cool to play with, though the depth of field is like 2mm or something, so its easy to mess up. It takes pretty sweet portrait shots, of people or fishes, as long as its bright out. Which in a dark aquarium through smudgy glass its usually not, so there were definitely more misses than hits this time.
And then I didn't have to get them back to fedex until Monday afternoon, so Monday morning I went down to the Sac zoo and chased around the critters there, mostly with the 6D and the 400 super tele. The pictures were better outside, though there were more trees in the way, and most were through wire fences, which sortof blurred things a bit. But I got to watch the new tiger cub play hide-and-seek-and-pounce with his mom for about an hour, which was probably enough to make anyone explode with awws.
Anyway I'll get around to posting the actual pictures at some point, after I find some more hard drive space, but for now have a
jellyfish and a
baby tiger eating a log.
