Tahoe Ski-o day 6: Tahoe XC
Helping with this one, but Jonis did most of the field work for it, driving the snowmobile trails and making all the courses. I just did some of the computer work. We had everything set with plenty of time to spare, so Jonis and I went out to wake up all the controls. It just happened that the blue course touched all the controls, so we went out to race that. Jonis was high 50:xx

map1 and map2 and qr1 and qr2. Conditions were awesome: totally solid off trail, and all the narrow trails were nicely snowmobiled and visible.
2-3: Got confused out of 2, thinking if I wanted to go above or below the reentrant to 3, decided above and so cut out to the trail above and went left, except I was still one big trail above the right one. So I looped back down through 2 again.
11-12: Cut off the corner and headed down towards the field which I could sortof see until I picked up a trail, then headed straight down until I saw the control, which worked surprisingly well.
14-15: Saw a control and so went down the trail, but it was one trail early. Figured it out as soon as the number didn't match, and cut sideways to the next trail.
16-17: Ha. Already been to that one. Went low, mostly on a whim and because it looked slightly shorter.
18-19: This was further right on the hill than I was expecting, but I just stayed between the narrow trails on the crust and it led right into it.
22-23: went really high on the big trail because I didn't want to climb on the crust, but it probably would have been fine.

Super awesome race. I was having tons of fun out there. Conditions were fast and the crust skiing was awesome, and it was technical narrow trail stuff that I didn't set, so I even got mixed up a few times.

Sierra ski-o tour day 5: Tahoe Donner score-o
This was pretty awesome. Easily the most fun score-o I've done in a long while. Conditions were perfect, rock solid crust meant you could go anywhere, and Jon set controls everywhere. There wasn't just an obvious loop that got them all, so with the hills you really had to plan things. Also he set enough controls that we couldn't clear them all, but just barely.

map and qr. Got all but two. We invented a mass start for all the fast kids, and I started north on the two close ones, which everyone else skipped. Back in sight of Anna going to 39, then passed her to 49. I think she skipped 70, so I was on her tail again to 45 and 46, but made a flatter cut to 44 so I got ahead again there. Out and back to 50, decided if I was going to skip anything it would be 51 because of big climb out and back. I was already on 27 minutes after 57, so I decided to skip 42 because it looked like at least 4-5 minutes (later testing says 4:25), which was too much over the target 1:20 average time per control. Up to the top and out the long loop to 71, which was fine because the snow was sexy fast the whole way.

Then the monster downhill straightline run down the mountain, where each leg was an awesome downhill crust ski cut to the next. Decided at the top that the obvious cut 67-75 didn't fit the rest of the route, so I left 75 out, but then all the rest took no time at all so I had plenty of time to fit it in, even going uphill.

Had four minutes left on the clock, and the out and back to 42 took 4:25 when I tested it during control pickup (with warmer, softer snow). So that would have fit in during the race, but I think if I was that close at the end I would have skipped the uphill to 75 to be safe. But it could have fit. I don't think there's a way to have gotten them all, except maybe some backwards loop that does a downhill from 42-51 to avoid the two separate out-and-backs.

Rest day. Easy ski-o around some courses in Prosser. A bunch of people there. Made new courses (c, d) which were mostly flat, since the old folks were whining about rest days. The trails were very melted out and really hard to see, but I seemed to be the only one bummed out by it, so I guess it worked out.

skate ski 1:17:44 [2] 17.32 km (4:29 / km) +225m 4:13 / km

Easy afternoon ski with Dad around the valley at TD. Super warm (55?) and sunny, but the snow was surprisingly fast and solid.

Note

Finished January with 43 hours of skiing, half of which was ski-o. Happy with that, given that I had seven zero days (six because I was on a plane, one because it was pouring). Got 554 ski-o controls, which probably sounds like a lot for a month for you summer-o people, but skiing goes all fast and you can easily rock 40 or 50 sprinty controls in an hour workout.

The plan for Feb is roughly the same, though we need another snowstorm to make more ski-o, this one is pretty much used up. Also the birkie will take out a week for not-so-much-ski-o.

Sierra ski-o tour day 4: Auburn Ski Club sprint Blue
Super fun courses by Anna. A couple good snowmobile cuts kept things interesting, and lots of uphills and fast downhills on the big trails. Made the wrong route choice on the first big climb, should have gone back through the start field.

Busted up my thumb pretty good on a wipeout coming down through one of the open field / 6 way trail junctions. Right after a Y in two trails one went up and one went down, so there was a subtle two foot vertical drop between them. I was coming perpendicular to both of them, and reading the map and didn't see it at all until I was airborne. Landed hard but upright for about another 20 feet, then lost it and sat down hard on top of my right hand + pole, which bent the thumb in a bad direction. I think its ok, just sprained, but it'll probably be huge by the morning.

Sierra ski-o tour day 3: Northstar
map and qr.
Mostly fun race. Lots of big trails, a few little snowshoe trails, and plenty of hills. Started in front of Jonis, so I got to lead all the cuts, but the offtrail snow was solid so it didn't matter much for speed, just navigation. He won by 45 seconds.
1-2: cut down from the big trail, didn't see it, so backtracked on the little trail for a bit, when I was really just a few meters short of it.
4-5-6-7-8: holy doglegs. won the downhill cuts from 5-6 though.
16-17: tried to cut the last zigzag, but the snow in the field was super soft and punchy so I lost a bunch of time on a really short section there.

Control pickup, no pole style. Which made it a little slow going all the way up the super steep hill again, but the snow was warm and fast so the flat sections were easy and awesome. Did some long fast bushwhacks down the hill on the far side, which was softer than the morning so a little punchy, thus dicey without poles for balance (and also carrying piles of controls and stands)
Then down the downhill ski trail back to the village.

Sierra ski-o tour day 2 - Bear Valley
map and qr.

Colder last night, and an inch of new snow, so things were mostly solid everywhere and the narrow trails got more passable. Big trails were definitely still faster than the little trails, and it felt like there were a lot of legs that were in on the narrow stuff just to punch and right back out again. Race went well, I was basically in control of navigation and skiing everywhere except 10-11, where I didn't read the second trail and did a little loopity bit on the approach. Good stuff.
