Andrew and I set out to climb Mt Rose, with the full expectation that it would be snow covered but boot packed and solid for the entire trail, as it is a wildly popular hike. So we didn't bring any snowshoes or skis or other floatation/style enhancing footwear, he was in boots and I was in running shoes. What we sortof forgot was that since I had gotten a foot or two of snow at my house in the last couple days, at 7000', then the trailhead at 9000' had probably gotten more and hadn't melted yet. There was no sign of the trail, and the snow was not corned up at all yet. So we quickly gave up on the Mt Rose idea and postholed our way up Tamarack Pk, the shorter one you go around on the way to Rose. Took us a good two-something hours to the top (for a mile and 1000' vertical), but it was a nice day and sunny and warm so we sat around and watched the bc skiers and the snowmobilers make fools out of themselves in the avalanche chutes. For three hours. We finally ran out of food and had to get down to Reno to find Carol, so we bailed back down the ridge in a graceful postholing sortof fashion.
