woohoo, #2. Two laps around Donner Lake first, since if I tried to put those off until the end I'd definitely not do it. Then up over Brockway and down around the lake. Truck traffic was pretty bad until Spooner, they've got 50 closed for repairs and all the long hopper trucks full of gravel/dirt/tacos for the construction are coming around the lake. Passed some old guy that got whiffed, went over and got cut up pretty bad.

It was maybe 10 degrees colder today than last time, maybe 50 degrees in the sun, but I kept riding across the bottom of valleys coming down from the peaks that had super chilly breezes. Had the fleece tights on, and it wasn't quite warm enough to keep the shell jacket off the whole time, I was constantly stopping to put it on for the downhills and take it off for the uphills. Good on the water this time, I found a freeze-proof faucet on a beach in South Lake so I refilled and downed a bottle there, though I still lost 13lbs, and thats after drinking 5 big bottles. Stupid five percent humidity. Definitely need more calories though, I started bonking around Emerald Bay, stopped and ate almost everything I had left, which helped but I was still dragging for the rest of the ride.

Easy run with Jonis wandering around the woods and some dirt roads, mostly trying to avoid snow. Woods were pretty nice, everything is saturated from the snowmelt, so the pine duff is pretty solid to run on.

Also apparently I'm now the jwoc coach. Unemployment ftw.

Note

Sweet, still 150 miles from home and this is already the second time I've put the car in park on the highway. And I'm not even to the part with chain control yet. Yay springtime!

Corporate team building o-meet extravaganza was pretty cool, though the fairly light rain and fairly heavy wind scared most people away. Still had 50 or 60 though.

Note

Ok that sucked a lot. Sacramento to Truckee, 100 miles, 5.5 hours. No traffic, just terrible conditions. And I could even do the first part at 40mph without hydroplaning, but then it turned to snow. A small amount of that time was spent putting on the chains, and a smaller amount was spent making negative progress on the highway, but in general it was just white-knucklingly slow and slippery.

Random fact: some pickup trucks have their bottom sides painted red.

It actually got better on this side of the pass, don't know if it was warmer or colder or just hadn't gotten here yet. Though they hadn't plowed any of the roads off the highway in a couple hours, so it still took me half an hour to do the five miles from town up to home.

Seriously, all this new snow and I go for a bike ride? wtf. Though in hindsight, at least it was miserable. Not quite above freezing, my toes got painfully cold on the first downhill and never thawed out. It was sortof sunny for the first half, but then snowing an inappropriate amount for the whole climb back home. Now I have a headache from trying to warm up my feet in the shower.

Heading down towards SF later today for the corporate o-meet tomorrow, since we're supposed to get another good pile of snow tonight and I don't really want to find out at 3am tomorrow that the pass is closed.

Note

rest day. 8" of snow and counting. I almost went skiing, but then went out for firewood and realized that 8" of snow, drifted behind anything immovable, can equal 4' of snow. Therefore, rest day. Plus they cancelled the Tour of California. Wimps. Thats what you get for moving it to May.
