Now orienteering is great and all, but running just can't do this to me. I feel like death right now. and its great. Not quite ski marathon death, but getting there.

Felt really good the whole time, except maybe the climb over Northstar, that sucked a lot. But the run back down the river from Tahoe City to Truckee was sweet: little bit downhill with a tailwind. If they'd just repave all the cracks in the road it would be a gorgeous section.

Also confirmed the biggest disadvantage of living on top of a mountain: living on top of a mountain. After a nice hard ride just about the last thing I want to do is climb another 1000ft to get home.

Note

started sorting through the photos from the last month. of which there are a lot. fortunately quite a few are blurry or just of the ground, so I can delete them quickly. I should perhaps start looking through the lens more when I take pictures.

with the parents by Tahoe. yea we got castles.

yosemite falls and north dome.

waterfalls in hetch hetchy. greatest rental car ever.

waterfalls in yosemite. and crazy rainbows.

the drive through idaho. yea highway traffic. also they spelled my name wrong.

NAOC middle. heh.

NAOC long. On average, over the many pictures from many races, Mike usually looks angriest in the finish chute. Ross in the woods. And yea.

NAOC sprint.

and thats only the first half...

Slept most of the day, then went out for run at sunset after it cooled down. Ran down through the neighborhood, then into the nordic trails along the power lines. Up to the warming hut and back across the middle of the mountain, where the trails are now tunnels through waist-high yellow wildflowers. Not much snow left, just a few big patches up by the ridgeline.

hiking 2:00:00 [3] 10.0 mi (12:00 / mi) +1500m 8:11 / mi

no permits left for St Helens, so I started heading down towards Lassen in CA. Except that one is just closed at the moment, but I was already halfway down the wrong side of Oregon by the time I figured that out, and going back north for something else is against the rules. .

So i climbed McLoughlin in southern OR instead. It's a nice sharp cone, but that's about it's only redeeming quality. Easy trail up rocks and volcano sand along one of the little ridges on the west side. To make things interesting I bushwhacked down off the wrong side and ran the PCT back to the car. Or got lost, it's still up for interpretation.

run 50:00 [3] 5.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

The joggity bits. Loving the new pack. A little bit bigger than the old one, and seems to carry the weight a lot better. Probably still had 15 lbs In it for this and it felt ok.

Only a couple hundred miles from home, and the mt dew is doing its thing, so I'm gonna drive all the way back tonight. Went through the deer gauntlet at sunset, about 50 miles where the deer per mile was >> 1. Seriously, the first couple are cute, the first one to jump in front of the car is scary, but by the 100th one it's just getting annoying. Not sure what's worse though, bushes that look like deer, or deer that look like bushes.

hiking 4:00:00 [3] 10.0 mi (24:00 / mi) +2000m 14:48 / mi

Up the south ridge on Mt Adams in WA. Got a half-assed alpine start, just early enough to get up above treeline to watch sunrise. Snow was crunchy and awesome, and it was mostly clear skies with only a little bit of wind. Got some awesome pictures of Rainier, St Helens, Hood/Jefferson, and even the Three Sisters (maybe?) from the top, but I'm too tired to post them now. Started to thaw out and get slushy on the way down, sucks to be the hordes of people I passed that still had many hours to go up. Left at 3:45, top at 9, back down at 12.

In Seattle. Hit REI looking for the elusive jolly green plastic boots, got a new daypack instead, then headed south. Adams tomorrow.
