easy ski around with Donatas. icy and fast, if this holds tonight, tomorrow is gonna be sweet.

skate ski 59:05 intensity: (1:18 @1) + (7:40 @2) + (31:52 @3) + (18:15 @4) 15.51 km (3:49 / km)
ahr:142 max:163 shoes: 10 atomic red cheetahs

easy lap around the valley, shoulders are a little tired. a couple more inches of snow last night, which made this a lot of work, so that may be why. sunny and blue skies during the ski though.
10 PM

Note

hiked up to the top of donner ridge tonight to play with the camera a bit. this thing is sweet.

skate ski 1:03:46 intensity: (11 @0) + (1:25 @1) + (7:25 @2) + (26:30 @3) + (28:15 @4) 16.54 km (3:51 / km)
ahr:144 max:165 shoes: 10 atomic red cheetahs

a couple inches of greasy new snow last night, then windy flurries all day long. not the nicest conditions ever, but still not bad. felt a little burned out today, worse than the last two days, which is weird because last night I got twice as much sleep as the other two nights.

down into the valley, then a good crust ski down along the creek, then a bit more wandering.

and in other sad news, the beard is gone. too hot for that crap.

skate ski 1:29:47 intensity: (3:55 @1) + (21:29 @2) + (53:27 @3) + (10:56 @4) 22.84 km (3:56 / km)

Kicked myself out of bed early to get out and ski, despite only four something hours of sleep, because its getting hot enough here that the trails are trashed by 11am these days. We lost 3-4 feet of snow while I was gone, but that just means it all compacted into wonderful crust skiing sweetness. So about half of this was on trails, and the other half was just wandering through the woods. Collapsed a snowbridge crossing one of the creeks, but a gracefully executed bellyflop got me onto the other side before anything hit the water.

Note

back to VT then Boston last night, then got killed at Boggle by Alex and Ross, then fell asleep on the floor for half the night before I made it onto the couch. Chinese with Alex on monday, a little wandering around downtown Boston, then an incredibly uncomfortable 7 hours of twitchy sore plane time back to Sacramento, two hour drive back up to Truckee, and finally nap time by 3am.

So the 24h was good, didn't really seem as hard as last year, possibly because: I knew what to expect, or trail conditions were worse so we couldn't really ski fast (178km vs 206 last year), or it wasn't at 7000 feet, or I've perfected the ratio of Awesome Juice, or I had two other awesomely stupid people to keep it interesting. I'm a little stiff and sore, but nothing too bad, the only things that really hurt are some good bruises from a few nighttime falls on the ice. I remember feeling much colder at night last year, especially between laps, I think that was because it was snowing off and on and a bit windy so I was wet the whole time. I suppose changing clothes could fix that if I ever get more than one set of polypro. Also I need a real headlamp, or at least new batteries. Much fun though.

1 AM

skate ski 2:59:00 [3] 36.0 km (4:58 / km)
shoes: mystery mix-n-match

lap 4: finally got cold and started to ice up, so things got fast and crazy. Dad came out for the first lap, then self preservation kicked in and he bailed to go take a nap, while Alex and I did two more. Stole Dad's super headlamp for the second two laps, which was much better than my collection of dead batteries (the real set for the big light, the spares, and even the spare headlamp). started in on the Awesome Juice on this lap, and it turns out its still awesome. splits: 76:00, 56:00, 57:00.
5 AM

skate ski 2:25:00 [3] 28.5 km (5:05 / km)
shoes: mystery mix-n-match

lap 5: one more crazy icy death lap in the dark, then we picked up dad and did a mildly crazy icy death lap in the light, then a bonus 5k to kill some time before we were supposed to meet Ali. splits: 51:00, 63:00, 21:00.
8 AM

skate ski 2:10:00 [3] 23.0 km (5:39 / km)
shoes: mystery mix-n-match

lap 6: Dad did two short laps, while Ali, Alex, and I went up over the top of the hill to the road junction and back. pretty slushy and crappy at the top, but not too slow yet on the way back down. then found Ed, and pancakes, which were awesome.
