Birkie. I felt really good and conditions were suweet. 10 degrees at the start line, maybe 20 by the finish. No new snow in a couple days, so the trail was rock solid and super smooth. A few sections started to turn to sugar snow, but not many.

So I get into the start box early for my wave, and somehow there's already a zillion people in there, so I'm five or size people back from the front. During the couple runups I managed to elbow my way up until at the start I'm in the third row. Countdown, gate comes up, gun goes off, then the guy in front of me falls over. I wasn't even past the gate yet. wtf. Couldn't stop, but fortunately he fell to the side so I edged by only bashing his pole.

In the pack of madness for a full 20km before it finally spread out and I felt like I could ski. I spent most of that first part double poling or taking half stokes with the poles just trying to protect them from the jerks riding on my tails. Despite all that, the pace for the first two 10k splits was pretty consistent with the last 10k splits, so I guess it wasn't affecting it too much.

After the pack thinned out it was good for 20k, then I just felt pretty trashed on the last two hills (at 38k and 44k). Got through those and did ok into the finish.

We got a foot of new concrete overnight, and the groomers hit it just before I got there. This stuff packs down solid instantly, but was still lumpy between the treads, so the skiing wasn't really too good. Flying out to WI tonight.

yea new skis. snowing pretty hard, so no visibility, and about an inch of fluff over solid trails. new skis are wicked fast, or maybe its just the fact that the bottoms are flat.

skate ski 44:37 intensity: (18 @0) + (42 @1) + (13:41 @2) + (14:31 @3) + (15:25 @4) 9.0 km (4:57 / km)

easy ski around the front of TD. snowing off and on, but pretty hard, so there was a couple inches of fluff on the trail and visibility varied from zero to lots. skis were slow as junk, but thats because of cold wax from VT and infinite grooves on the bottoms that didn't really help all the new snow. sure hope I get some new skis before the birkie.
