Note

another 'rest' day. spent the morning finishing up things for the first OTCF race, and dealing with the associated headaches. ok migranes. but I think I might just pull this thing off. then drove up to sacramento for the ski-o race in tahoe tomorrow. typing this from the hotel room on the shiny new laptop!

Note

so they canceled the race at sequoia tomorrow, for reasons that no one quite knows. especially weird as this is probably the best january snow they've had in years. maybe I'll hit yosemite instead?

roller ski 44:00 [2] 12.0 km (3:40 / km)
shoes: v2s #1

at the beach. super windy, it kept causing my poles to plant inside my skis, which is not so graceful.

Note

So we didn't get today as a holiday from work, but instead of coming to work we could spend the day volunteering for some good cause if we wanted to. So a bunch of us spent the day working down at the beach cleaning stuff up with the Surfrider Foundation. Mostly light-labor sort of things, which was a good active-rest day I suppose. Although you could definitely tell that most programmers aren't cut out for this stuff, as most of the others were sore and worn out by lunchtime.

some pics from the weekend. From the finish of the sprint, and the full moon sat night.

orienteering 1:44:00 [3] 10.4 km (10:00 / km)

Anza Blue day 2
Overall quite a crappy race. Legs were tired from yesterday, and I was probably still dehydrated. I was pre-starting so I could help with things, and my start time was at 8. But at 6:50 they came by and let me know that that was a mistake, the start window was earlier today and it really meant 7. So by 7:15 I was going, full of oatmeal and not much water. I bombed 1, stopping short by about four reentrants, and things didn't get much better for the next 14 controls. Little mistakes on most of them. The left leg hurt pretty bad from the cactus, until I sprained the right ankle on 5, and then it felt relatively better. Most of the running today was flat and on really sandy soil, so it was just work.

orienteering race 34:56 [3] 2.0 km (17:28 / km)

Anza Maze-O
Enough of this running crap, finally we get into full contact orienteering. Cliffs and mud banks and rocky slopes and slot canyons. A lesson in insane map simplification. Won by a couple minutes over Mikkel, who I think was a couple minutes again ahead of the next guy. Went back down in the canyons afterwards with Spike to shoot some sundance quality video of Clem crashing through the slots.
