hiking 3:00:00 [3]

getting to UT the second time was not without incident, but I've already whined about that enough for one month.

climbed Mt Olympus just outside of Salt Lake City with Andrew. a few miles of trail hiking, then snowshoeing up a pretty deep powder glade for maybe 1500ft vertical, then a 500ft super steep gully to the summit. mostly snowshoes, but we switched to crampons for a few dicey sections of rock that were too clumsy in snowshoes. snowing a little almost the whole time, but we were right on the edge of the storm so now and then it would open up into good views of the city. left at noon, back at 8:30, still light. yea for daylight savings time. pics

run 1:10:38 [3] 9.05 mi (7:48 / mi)
ahr:162

was supposed to fly to utah tonight to go climbing, but that didn't happen. United sucks. you think I would have learned this at christmas.

got to the airport more than an hour before the flight left, waited in line for half an hour since they had 20 self service kiosks, of which 17 were turned off, and one guy behind the counter taking bags. by the time I moved the 6 people forward up to a computer (40 mins until the flight left), it told me it couldn't check me in because my flight left in less than 45 mins, and that I should talk to an agent. ten minutes later when the one guy finally walked over he told me that he couldn't check me in either because he only had the eticket counter but the people at the other counter (non-eticket) could. of course there were only two agents over there, and about a hundred people in exactly the same situation as me. I got a hold of somebody on the phone at united and they were no help at all but assured me that three people was more than enough to handle an entire checkin system at lax during rush hour.

I got rebooked on a flight tomorrow morning in an effort to not waste the entire ticket, but it doesn't get in until noon, which kinda blows the climbing plan for the weekend

I did realize that I haven't been genuinely pissed off in quite a while, but maybe I should try it more often since it appears to be good for my training.

so Bono stopped by the office yesterday. not sure why, they were in town on tour last week and maybe he had nothing better to do than to hang out with us.

skate ski race 2:37:23 [4] 42.0 km (3:45 / km) +800m 3:25 / km

Mammoth Marathon. good race. cloudy and windy, in places very windy. the weather report said "winds 20-30 mph, gusting to 90 mph over the ridges". we weren't up on any of the ridges, but up in the high lakes it was fairly gusty. If it was a headwind it would stop you dead (had to offset skate downhill), but where it was a tail wind I could stand up straight and it pushed me uphill. snow was solid and fast, about 25* the entire time.

A fun course, lots of long (1k) hills, but not too steep. the last 3k go from the highest point on the course to the lowest (the finish) while dropping about 600', a nice [crazy] fast finish down some winding trails.

Arms and legs pretty tired from fighting the wind too much, and the lungs were feeling the altitude since the entire course is at 9000', but still a good race.
