Note

so I went to bed at 5 saturday night, and got up at 1am. drove up to yosemite all night, got there at daybreak. driving was kinda tough since the middle 200 miles was covered in super thick fog, which at night made the visibility about three dashed white lines ahead of you on the road.

skate ski (skate) 3:06:00 [3] 37.0 km (5:02 / km) +600m 4:39 / km

skied the glacier point road. the first 8k had been groomed last night, the rest last week. it was still frozen solid on the way out, and there were lots of ruts and tracks melted in from the day before, which made for some dodgy downhills. saw no one until almost back to the parking lot.

skate ski (skate) 2:54:00 [3] 35.5 km (4:54 / km) +500m 4:35 / km

lap two in the afternoon. this is xc california-style. air temperature when I left: 75 degrees in the shade. horray for yellow wax. the snow had about a half inch of slush on the top, but under that was solid. skiing in shorts and a tshirt, and still not getting cold on the downhills. got out to the end around sunset. stopped a little above the point, since the road down had half a dozen bare spots that I didn't want to bother walking over again. it was dark by the time I started back, skied the last 15k by solid moonlight. passed the groomer on his way out, so the last 8k uphill was super smooth. (temp when I got back to the car: 22 deg)

Note

fog was still there on the drive back. had to stop every hour for nap time, so I didn't get home until about 4am. kinda long for a daytrip, so I don't think I'll be doing this too often. but the views made it worth it, probably the best ski day I've had yet.
