Orienteering (Foot) 1:23:04 [3] 4.63 mi (17:56 / mi) +136m 16:26 / mi
spiked:20/21c slept:4.0 weight:179lbs

Patuxent River Park, MD. Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps National Orienteering Championship (NJROTC), MD. Peggy and I split the Day 1 course controls going to all of them to turn on the electronic boxes and verify that the controls were still in place. In addition, we had to set out some trash bags and water cups. I had a few radio controls and relay stations to get to too. These were set out earlier by Valerie Meyer but I had to turn them on. At one point I needed to radio back for help finding a switch on radio relay station in the middle of a marsh--the switch was actually on a different stop. I didn't necessarily run the most efficient score-o route. I forgot about the radio items marked differently and had to circle back more than once. I also forgot to leave cups at one control so I went back for that. We'd gotten a late start with the vetting waiting for the cups and trash bags so near the end we were pushing the official race start time. I heard Peggy finish while I had 3 more controls to get to. Fortunately, these were near the half-way point of the course and I was able to radio back from the field that all was okay.

Hiking (Trail) 25:00 [2] 1.9 km (13:09 / km)
slept:0.25

Patuxent River Park, MD. Navy Reserve Officer Training Corps National Orienteering Championship (NJROTC), MD. I went jogging and walking with Max from the barn at Riverside Field to the wooden bridge and observation tower with Max, who was riding on his bicycle. With that, and my coat, I didn't feel like jogging much. The whole time we were out there was a snow squall in process. Wet flakes were blowing and getting us wet on our outer layers. I had gone back home after the morning vetting to pickup Max, get him to his basketball game, and aferward bring him to the park. This made for a busy day. We'd eaten lunch on the way before the hike.

Orienteering (Control Pickup) 1:36:30 [2] *** 3.98 mi (24:15 / mi) +100m 22:29 / mi
spiked:9/10c

Patuxent River Park, MD. NJROTC, MD. I started off with John Baker. Bob Turbyfell got several controls near the start and Peggy picked up others so I thought this would go fairly quickly. However, I didn't realize how much the stakes weighed. I also had some radio items and a water control to get. I was only about 5 controls and radio stops into the loop before it became impractical to run. There was one outlier control so I was able to drop a pile, run out to get it, then come back. It had been drizzling and was still cold. One control was in the middle of a very muddy ditch. My feet got wet and partly numb. The worst was having to cross a creek that I'd usually just jump over or splash through. By this point, I had to use two arms to carry the stakes, trash, and a bag of controls and radio stuff. With the load, I had to walk through the cold water. My feet were just about all numb after that. Once I got onto a trail it was easier. I got the stakes on my shoulder.
