Running in terrain 18:33 [1] 1.64 km (11:19 / km) +67m 9:24 / km

Since I was passing by Talcott Mountain on the way back from having spent the night at Charlie's, and it was a nice morning, I decided to stop and check out the big main trail up to the ridge. This wasn't really running, it was a brisk walk on a pretty wide and smooth trail. Naturally, when I got up to the launch, there was a brisk breeze blowing straight in, and I just smiled, imagining what it would be like if I had brought my hang glider with me...

Orienteering race 4:41:18 [3] **** 26.3 km (10:42 / km)
shoes: VJ Falcons #1

Hudson Highlander XII. Pretty fine course this year, and I did pretty well, finishing in 12th place, about 10 minutes behind PG and a minute or so ahead of JoeB (first finisher of the Stubborn Seven). Kept moving reasonably well for the whole course, and felt much better when it was done than I have in many previous years. Only one significant goof (took the indistinct trail that turned out to be horrible instead of the one that turned out to be good, and got stuck in a horrendous laurel thicket), which cost me something on the order of 10 minutes.

Note

Various sore muscles in my legs, presumably a result of Thursday's aerial adventures. We'll see how they do tomorrow. I saw Stephen this afternoon (after his performance as the Dormouse in Alice in Wonderland), and he wished me success in the Highlander, saying that he hoped for a top-50 finish for me, and then revised that up to top-30. Have to try to not disappoint him!

Hang gliding! (West Rutland) 32:23 [3] 2.16 km (15:00 / km) +411m 7:41 / km
shoes: Wal*Mart Carson

Well!

115 minutes of flying, with very little wind, so ridge soaring wasn't going to work. But the lapse rate and buoyancy/shear ratio were good, I guess (whatever they are), which meant that we had thermals. And that meant that I got to push my PR for altitude up to 5160 feet (my old PR was 3620 feet).

The logged part of this was vehicle retrieval, because we didn't have a designated driver today, so I volunteered to go up on foot to get the truck. About half on trails, and half through the woods, obviously including some hellaciously steep stuff. I think there's room for improvement on the route choice, although this was okay.
