Orienteering race 15:45 [4] *** 2.4 km (6:34 / km)
spiked:11/11c shoes: VJ Falcons #1

Junior Team fundraiser sprint relay at Manitou Lake, with Clare and Nancy. Ran the first leg, and I was getting pretty hammered by the crowd for the first half of the course, out in the easy open flats. But the second half was in the more technical reentrants, and I was able to quickly spike everything while the faster runners in my vicinity had to scrutinize their maps and bobble around. So I tagged off in 6th place, and my teammates were able to hang on pretty well and finish us up in 16th.

Note

Also did two runs of the "Uber-Competitive String-O" that Fredrickson and company had set up, the first time in 52 seconds, and the second time blindfolded in 4:13. Pretty good fun, this year's equivalent of the Culvert Crawl, I'd say, but with much greater participation.

Orienteering race 2:30:05 [3] *** 14.0 km (10:43 / km) +515m 9:03 / km
spiked:16/18c shoes: VJ Falcons #1

US Long-O Champs, Saylor Park. A pretty decent race, I think. One error due to lining up my compass on the line connecting two controls (recovered when the nearly-flat contours didn't look right), and one when I was overtaken by a pack which I got swept along with just as they made an error (and I recovered first). But I managed to not make an error later when almost everyone in my vicinity did, and I guess I paced myself pretty well because I was moving pretty well right up to the end. 11th overall, but an M45 silver medal.

Orienteering race 35:03 [3] *** 4.0 km (8:46 / km) +148m 7:24 / km
spiked:12/12c shoes: VJ Falcons #1

US Short-O Champs, Manitou Lake. Damn near perfect run, the one leg that split analysis calls an error was one that I took a little wide to save some climb, maybe it cost me a bit at the moment but saved some energy for the rest of the course. 6th place overall, and another M45 gold..

Note

So how does one prepare for the US Short Course Champs (or Middle, or whatever it's called)? How about skipping dinner and staying up late, dancing in a moderately vigorous fashion to the music of String Cheese Incident at Red Rocks Amphitheater? A fine performance by the band, I have to say. I had seen them a half-dozen times before, but the last time had been in 1998.

Running in terrain 15:14 [3] 1.15 mi (13:15 / mi) +145m 9:31 / mi

Up to Red Rocks from where I had parked my car in Morrison, before the show. This was partially on pavement, and partially on a trail pointed out to me by the parking attendants. Kept moving along well despite the climb and the altitude.

Road running 9:02 [4] 1.3 mi (6:57 / mi)

After the show, back down to the car via the road, with a headlamp. I got out early enough that the traffic wasn't even backed up yet, and the first few cars were going faster that I was running. Still, I got back to my parking spot and was on the road well ahead of most of the concertgoers. If you aren't interested in hanging out for the post-show parking lot scene, leaving your car a distance from a concert venue and going on foot or by bicycle is a very cool and satisfying maneuver.

Orienteering 35:00 [1] ***

Helping out with the Mass Transit game for the JrJr Training Camp at Peaceful Valley. I was one of five people who was given a Line-O map and a schedule, and had to walk the line, waiting at specified points until prescribed times. The kids were given our itineraries, and had to intercept us. Nancy came along for the first half, then after the last group of kids found me, I went back to the dining hall.

Orienteering race 1:01:11 [3] *** 7.6 km (8:03 / km) +235m 6:58 / km
spiked:14/15c shoes: VJ Falcons #1

US Night-O Champs, Peaceful Valley, with the hatlamp. Errors were of only the most minor variety—split analysis shows a mistake at #7, I think, but I consider #4 to be the only place where I erred slightly. Confident, moving well, and taking mostly straight, aggressive routes. Fourth place overall, behind a couple of foreigners and one very talented young Texan, but good enough for an M45 gold.
