Orienteering race 1:37:59 [3] *** 6.54 km (14:58 / km)
spiked:11/14c

Joe English Conservation Area, Red. This is an UNO map that I had never been to before. Pretty nice piece of terrain, although the map is pretty old-school and sketchy in a few places. Course-setting was appropriate for the situation though. Screwed up three controls, all of them really my fault, although the map wasn't excellent in those spots. Should have recovered quicker in all three cases. Had to leave as soon as I finished, so I have no idea how I did, or whether anybody else even ran the course.

Bicycling 42:58 [3] 13.7 mi (3:08 / mi)

To Stephen's soccer game, on the Incubus. I do enjoy riding, and it's particularly nice when I can do it instead of driving to a place where I'm going to go anyway. Google Maps estimates 26 minutes for this trip by car, so this isn't too bad. Perhaps someday I will again have a situation where I can ride to work. I didn't see too many other cyclists out, although it was a nice day. I don't realy fit in with that crowd very well, because instead of brightly colored lycra I wear a T-shirt and a ratty old pair of shorts that Charlie gave me back in the early 90s. And I probaly ride faster than a lot of the people with the fancy clothes.

It's uphill on the way back.

Now doing these as two sets of 25, which is considerably easier and also allows for much better form. I was dreading these in May, but now I think they won't be bad at all.

Pull-ups 16 [5]

End of month trials. I had 16 in my head as a target, and when I got the 15th one, I tried real hard for #16. Stalled out with about 2" to go, and I think I managed to just barely get my chin higher than the bar. Didn't even bother to try for another one after that.

Hang gliding! (Morningside) 6:00 [4] +46m
shoes: Wal*Mart Carson

Yeah! Carried the glider up to the 150' for the first flight, then rode the ATV to the 450' for 10 more. So it was a pretty busy (and long) day. But the coolest thing is the last two flights. I was thinking about packing up when one of the other guys did one last flight and got some decent lift, staying up for a few minutes. So I decided to give it a try, and found a lot of lift, staying up for 9:45. Then I was unsure whether to quit while I was ahead or to get a little greedy, and I opted for the latter. While everybody else was packing up their gliders, I was cruising back and forth along the ridge for over 10 minutes. Totally sweet, smooth lift, never scary at all. If I had known what I was doing, I'm sure I could have stayed up for a half-hour or more, but as it is, that last flight was over four times longer than I'd flown on any previous day. I repeat, Yeah!

Morningside 450' x 1. One of my recent goals has been to stay in the air longer coming down from the 450' than it takes me to run up there (so my sink rate would be slower than my climb rate). With the 10:26 flight under my belt, I cruised up to the top in 6:14 — plenty of time to spare!
