Orienteering race 1:18:05 [4] 7.4 km (10:33 / km)
shoes: O-Spikes

Garmin had crapped on me the night before, so I have no data to look at. I was fairly happy with how I've done this weekend. I went through the vague areas numerous times without self-destructing. My error (R on 10 from the AP in) today that kept me above 10min/km was a distraction one...car was coming and I wanted to be in the woods (why?) before it rounded the bend.
Lessons from the weekend:
1. What is race pace. Less about you and more about the terrain and vegetation and course-setting/navigation challenges.
2. Absent other factors, I tend to navigate from vegetation first, contours second (since both affect speed in the woods as well), and compass use is pretty low in my kit-bag...lots of use this weekend convinced me that I would be better off using the compass more to cross areas and ignore the vegetation and/or contours. I quickly realized that one woods were white, light green were of varying density, and the transition between the two was NOT navigatible...so stop trying.
3. Pace transition. I tend to much toward a single pace, and I need to do more to consciouly traffic-light.

Orienteering 55:00 [3] *** 3.7 km (14:52 / km)
shoes: Montrail Hurricane Ridge

First exercise at Hickory Run. We talked through the legs and kept separating ourselves in the woods to make sure we weren't within sight of others...traded quite a few legs with Jeremy Colgan. Tom had asked us to go at slightly less than race pace. I found afterwards that I was right on the edge of big error--going at less than race pace, I stumbled onto what is my race pace for that terrain/course setting. Enlightening, and it allowed me to do as well as I've ever done at Hickory Run over the rest of the weekend.

Orienteering 50:00 [4] 3.5 km (14:17 / km)

Afternoon exercise with Nick Fuhriman, doing long-short-short rabbit drills. Amazing that the rabbit always seems to get caught, and I was also surprised by Nick...he can match me for a few legs, and head-to-head he just leaves me in the dust. Getting pretty tired.

Orienteering (Sprint) 18:49 [4] 2.7 km (6:58 / km)
shoes: Montrail Hurricane Ridge

Sprint course...fairly decent and clean after the first 4 where I did some J's out of or into controls. Very hard to keep track of where you are on this map.

Orienteering (Night-O) 1:08:00 [3] 4.5 km (15:07 / km)
shoes: Montrail Hurricane Ridge

Went fairly conservatively on the Night-O...looked at leg 12, (depression in med. green without a solid AP) and decided that I won't attempt that in daytime, let alone at night, so I refound #8, then attacked from there (finding the right control in the wrong spot?). I was amazed at how fast Tom did and how confident he was in knowing the control was wrong and coming out to rehang a replacement.
