Orienteering race 5:54:00 [3] 42.0 km (8:26 / km)
shoes: Adrenaline ASR
Fair Hill Rogaine with Jordan, who dragged me most of the way. My plan was to have him do lots of route simplification and map memory as training, with me backing him up, but we got a little too competitive in our quest to get all the controls, so we would up doing CAR with me doing the route planning and execution, him taking over at the attackpoint (and punching), while I cut the corner and handled the control exit and next route...it worked pretty well...he did some back up (rough compass) of my routes, and I was able to help on some of the attacks, but we were both getting routine mental rest. We also did an above average job of calorie management and forcing ourselves to eat (every 30 minutes, with one 45 min lapse)...ended up drinking three entire 1/2 gallon camelbacks during the race.
I have a really good feel for what Jordan needs to work on...he has some "low hanging fruit" improvements that will be easy and will lob chunks of time off his already-decent race scores:
-Needs to work on Red light, Yellow Light, Green light...he has it backwards...taking risks and going green right when he should be in Yellow or Red. He's particularly weak from the AP in (or in the control circle)...same thing I noticed at team trials in May (on the few points we were together).
-Distance Estimation (Measure & Pace): turns early on about 20% of his final approaches.
-I'm not convinced he backwards plans (CAR).
Those things said, he is a solid orienteer who, with some refinement, should continue to progress...I'm glad I have some specifics to work on him with.
