Alleluia, an O-event! A typical summer Brutal-O, stinging nettles edition. Course setter laid out several very good technical/mental traps on the Long course. A mix of Sprint and Red courses! Several challenges that helped shake a lot of rust off me. Very enjoyable despite the awful heat, but thankfully no bugs! Here's how it went for each control:
- Spike
- Spike
- I turned and looked for it too soon after coming down the hill, so a sloppy one but found it quickly
- Spike
- Spike
- Raod, forest, open, Spike
- Trail, bridge, thick green along river, very subtle, lucky I found it
- Totally screwed this one up because of 1) my terrible bearing discipline on this leg and 2) Talking myself into the feature being a big hill when obviously its just a subtle hill, so I ran up the giant hill which of course was the wrong hill, then had to relocate, re-attack from another angle, and even that I screwed up, so didn't get it until I re-attacked from #7 again only this time using strict bearing discipline and what do you know, found it! ugh!!
- Trails and spike
- Ok, this was a patently awful series of mistakes for me on this one. Took the white trail near 10 thinking I was on the yellow trail, then mistook the dish as the river... I was running along the river, not the ditch... I honestly believe my brain just decided to check out for about 5 minutes or more on this one... too many dumb mistakes and bad map reading issues to list here. Worst control of the course and it should have been an easy grab
- Spike
- Actually not too bad but missed it a little south of the pond and had to backtrack just a tad...was expecting to see more water but should have known with how dry its been
- This one was really tough to get, very subtle terrain/feature, and nothing to really go off of near it, a great challenge. I missed it on the first pass and wound up heading over to the trail to get myself to the trail bend as an AP and that did it.
- Spike
- Trails for Spike
- Ok, should have been super easy but I made it harder than it was. Once I got close I misread map thinking I needed to go west north of the fence and attack from the south... so I basically blew right past the control sitting out in broad daylight. figured that out when I didn't see it and came back to get it
- Trails, detour around the closed trail, cross bridge and compass bearing to Spike
- Straight at it from 17 to 18, good compass bearing this time and Spike
- A little wobbly biting off on a wrong trail but quickly fixed and got it
- Spike
- Almost a Spike, just too slow in the circle
- A little maze-like but a Spike
- Spike
F- Spike
