Orienteering race 23:16 [3] *** 3.2 km (7:16 / km)
spiked:20/26c shoes: Icebug

Totally awesome sprint at Univ of Michigan North Campus! Very not-awesome performance on my part. Somehow skipped one...I think it was 23. Very nice course design as I had a few spots where I became momentarily paralized trying to figure out which way to go and took a wrong turn once. Controls seem to be slow reacting maybe because I was first to punch them. Extremely enjoyable course and perfect day for it...we should do these more often.

Went out with Gavin on Sprint 2 afterwards. He loved it and did well when he had the map oriented the right way. He's getting to be a fast runner...how quickly they grow.

Thought Becca beat me but she mispunched too. Got a parking ticket on my car at the end. So much for free orienteering.

Radio Orienteering race 1:20:23 [4] ****
spiked:2/4c shoes: Inov8 X-Talon 212 CL

US ARDF Champs 2m (144 MHz) Classic at Umstead. My 1st gold medal in radio-O! Barely. Ken was chasing, passed by him once which scared me, finished just one cycle ahead! Every race for me this week for the top spot has been very close. Found 4 quickly out of start chute and exclusion zone. Was very hesitant and sluggish to leave north side of map due to multiple path ambiguities on a couple other TXs. #3 was almost totally silent from the north but it barely broke my squelch in one direction so went with that getting 5 on the way. 3 was in a low bowl on far SE side of map which explains the weak signals. A little sloppy orienteering back to where I thought 2 was at but it got the job done. Looking back this was a very challenging course as far as reflections, a weak signal, and even orienteering and physicality, so pretty happy w/ how I did despite a couple nav mistakes and difficulty interpreting the signals on the north side.

US ARDF Champs Sprint. I did a lot better than the practice day. The tweaks I made to my strategy helped. Very fun course and venue. Nice spectator area for gravy. Made one major mistake going down wrong trail leading to lots of unnecessary running which probably cost me the gold. Once again Imre just barely ahead of me!
