Note
(rest day)

Rest day. Reflected on the past week. Totally awesome time and it really helped me expedite getting back into the game per say. Huge thanks to Coach, other Armed Forces development team athletes, Thierry, and event organizers for an incredible week. And so nice to spend some time w/ the fam. Nice to see fellow Armed Forces orienteers plus wonderful people that I've met from various parts of the country. And tremendous scenery in NH/VT/NY. Eye is healing after Saturday's branch collision. Also decided 2 things this past week. 1- I like Middles better than Longs. 2- When the time comes to get out of the M21E business (hopefully that's not anytime soon) I will start doing soaring (gliders) as a sport. They have a navigation component to some of the competitions too. Racing, cross country, altitude records, etc.

Orienteering race 26:12 [4] ** 3.3 km (7:56 / km) +70m 7:11 / km
spiked:23/23c shoes: X-Talon 212

I had 1 mistake & only 1 mistake today. I passed by the control at end of spectator lawn without punching it! Even saw the control ahead of me, looked at map to check, and for some reason I surmized that it wasnt on my course...which for a picosecond or two seemed strange to me, but then on I went bolting past it. Hugely deflated after getting the printout. Words can't describe the internal outrage. Would have been my highest scoring event the whole week and it was my 1st perfect national sprint navigation-wise, but I blew it. I think its been years since I MP'd on a course as that was a problem for me when I first started the sport. That all said I obvioisly need to work on building my speed back up too as my normal sprint times were in the 5 to 7 min/km range back in the ohio summer fast-o days on comparable courses circa 2009-2013 and today was at 8/km. On the positive side I had a 100% clean course, I would have given anything to run 8/km just a few months back, let alone orienteer at a NAOC, and it was a very fun course on a nice campus on a beautiful day and it counted for military points credit, so I wont be complaining.

Orienteering race 4:02:00 [4] ***** 13.7 km (17:40 / km) +575m 14:36 / km
23c shoes: X-Talon 212

Wow. Getting sleep and hydration actually makes a big difference :) No near blacking out like last Sat's Long despite running for 4 hrs! Very technical and very long course--there were not many moments where you could just chill while running. Had to be thinking and in contact with the map almost the whole time. And that map- wow, talk about crazy times trying to read that. Very good accurate map, just a ton of detail soup! My biggest time drains were on 2 and 12...probably like 30+ min's lost between both. I think 3 hrs on this course was within my reach but messed up enough not to get it. Still, a lot of DNFs today so just happy to finish and got all the controls. Hips handled everything great, knock on wood. Considering where I've come from I'm happy to be out there for 4 hrs without any problems. Totally amazed that someone (TGIF) could finish this thing in 90 minutes! That's ludicrous speed!!

Orienteering race 1:10:58 [3] *** 5.5 km (12:54 / km)
shoes: X-Talon 212

Mixed bag today, fun course, nice weather for it, and a heck of an amazing bunch of orienteers on Blue! Nice to see Hannah place on the podium today! Most of the course I did well, much better than last Saturday's debacle. But I flew past 13 going too fast, terrible route choice to 14 (the long leg), and I still don't know what I did to get so confused on 19. But I had some amazing moments including my favorite: spiking a control along with a log jump right at the control, using one hand to anchor my jump and the other was a mid-air punching of the control while I was still in flight. :) Most of the course I was doing well and on target, plus the energy and hips were great, really felt for first time like I'm close to where I left off pre-hip problems and the training this week definitely helped too. I think I determined today that middles are my favorite.

Armed Forces USA training camp - Another nice training event at Harriman. Trouble with 1, 2 & 3 so-so, was hauling at a great pace with good groove on 4 through 9, I was slow to 11, and 12-14 were out in the subtle terrain that i was having trouble interpreting so very good challenge and exercise there and walked those ones. Overall happy with this one and I think it was an improvement. Many thanks to Coach and Kevin for setting it all up.

Armed Forces USA training camp - Thierry's training course. Corridor-O section, control picking section, and contours-only section made for an outstanding training session. Grateful for athletes like him who share their time and efforts. Very fun. Managed the corridor-O without much problem. But I got messed up going from the corridor o area to the control pick area, wound up at 12 instead of 5, probsbly parallel errors and too much climb. Once I got into control pick it went well. Same for contour-o. Only one i didnt find was 25, small depression. Teammates say you had to be really close to it to see it. Went slow for this session to focus on technical training.
