Note
(injured)

Strangely the hips feel better today than Friday before orienteering on Saturday. That's weird but I will take it. However left hip (not yet operated on) very much can tell is not happy. Not sure how long I can go without addressing that one.

Orienteering race 42:49 [3] *** 4.1 km (10:27 / km) +185m 8:31 / km
(injured) shoes: Vasque Velocity

Another stab at orienteering and testing out the post-surgery hip situation. Last attempt last month went really well, but between then and now I went for very low-key, slow pace 6 km run and something went wrong and jacked my hip up back to a worse condition- ugh! Had a lot of pain after sitting down for significant periods of time ever since and lately have had to do a lot of sitting in classes and driving, so the hips have been painful. But had some slight improvement late this past week so decided to go for a short course today, hence the Green.

Overall the course went well hip-wise without any issues, but as for my navigation I had a few significant screw-ups that I could blame on rustiness but can't because I know better. Out the gate at the start I was pretty slow to interpret the map and lots of doubting myself, but once I found the open field I picked up the pace. On the way to #3 I was basically just running out of gas on the uphills because of not being in good shape - not a whole lot I could do about that at that point! I liked my path to #4 although I was hesitating a lot. #7 was a big problem. I liked my initial plan to wrap around the hill, but I think I got sucked into looking at the wrong erosion gulley - I was farther south and west than I should have been. Liked my path to #8. #9 just didn't exercise good bearing disciple coming out of #8, and was going up the wrong reentrant, but quickly realized it was too dry and the next one over west of me was more lush as the map would suggest so scurried over and got it. #10 established a trend for me. On my way to 10 I was saying to myself, "ok last time you planned to aim off to the left and you weren't far enough over to the left, so this time you should aim off more to the left". That's what I said to myself but apparently I didn't actually do it because the same thing happened as last time. I thought I wound up farther east on the trail catching feature than I actually was, resulting in heading up the wrong reentrant on a parallel error, and had to thus backtrack east to the right reentrant. So a bit of a bad showing for me navigationally today. But that all said I was happy with how the hips carried me through the course and that is what really matters at this point for me. Didn't opt for the follow-on Sprint course in interest of not overdoing the hips today--too bad!!

As last time I was highly impressed w/ QOC's event and am really thankful for everyone who volunteered to organize and hold the great event. Perfect running weather -- no sun beating down on you and just the right temp too!

Now I wait to see how the hips feel tomorrow which is always the real test.
