Run warm up/down 5:00 [2]
shoes: Inov-8 Mudlcaw 330 August 2009

A little running to the start.

Orienteering race 42:05 intensity: (12:05 @3) + (30:00 @4) *** 5.1 km (8:15 / km) +190m 6:57 / km

Hungaria Cup, Open 3, Day 6.

This was clearly the worst run I had in Hungary. Just didn't have any concentration. After flubbing three late controls to the tune of 5 minutes I just packed it in. Not an outing to remember.

Running the "Last Chance for Gold."

WOC 2009 Beer O0001

Trememndous fun, even if I did design the course and hang the controls. Actually, I had two minor problems. I actually took one sub-optimal route choice (maybe 10 seconds?) and my third beer (a Leffe) normally one of my favorites, clearly is inappropriate for competitive beer O.

Easy warmup.

Hungaria Cup, Day 5, Open 3.

Another good race on the relay/middle terrain. This one was not entirely trivial, but it was still pretty easy. It was also tremendous fun.

I was pretty clean through halfway, but got a little raggedy at the very end. I probably had two minutes in execution mistakes, but a little more in sub-optimal route choices. Felt good.

Checking locations for the "Last Chance for Gold" aka "North American, European, and Rest of World Inaugural Invitational Beverage Orienteering Sprint, etc., etc.

Everything looked OK, but the map was not super. It would certainly do.

(rest day)

Watched and cheered an awesome relay. Very nice.

Warmup for the sprint qualifier. This includes the 9 minutes to get to the start.

WOC 2009 Sprint Qualification Heat A.

Definitely not happy about this race, and unpleasantly surprised.

I will not get existential or despondent, etc., but certainly deserve a kick in the a** rather than a pat on the back.

I don't know what happened, but I know I was slow. Clearly my first two legs were unduly conservative; I see that now that I have drawn my course. But, after that, it still sucked. In fact, until 11 (12:44 running for me) my splits were pretty awful. After that, they picked up and I was at least in the 20s--not great, but respectable.

The thing is, the first 10 controls were the forest ones, in the drainage areas, and the ones after were more conventional "orange course" stuff. I'm OK at least running around on the trails and fields, but negotiating reentrants--not so much.

From a WRE perspective, this appears to be my third worst WOC performance in my inglorious career.

WOC 2009 Sprint Qual0001
That would be a stupid way to finish.

Run warm up/down 7:00 [2]
shoes: Salomon XCR

Warmup before the town sprint.

Definitely feeling little zip in the legs due to the climb over the past few days and not having any food since breakfast.

Orienteering race 9:55 [4] *** 1.8 km (5:31 / km)
shoes: Salomon XCR

Hungaria Cup, Day 4, Open 2. This was a sprint in downtown Miskolc. The first such sprint like this I have done. I would definitely do another. Again, stupid easy.

Actually, I lost 10-15 seconds. Some of that was running by the finish punch.

Finally won one of these: 1/46, and 47 seconds clear, but clearly there was no competition on this poseur course. So, the last 2 days I will do Open 3.

Run warm up/down 15:00 [2]
shoes: Inov-8 Mudlcaw 330 August 2009

Warmup before the 3K, 200M+ "middle." After I got to the start and realized I didn't have my epunch, I had to go back to the finish to grab it. As it was in my bag, this was only a "half-Eddie."

But, I got a good warmup.

Orienteering race 25:36 [4] *** 3.0 km (8:32 / km) +215m 6:17 / km
spiked:8/13c shoes: Inov-8 Mudlcaw 330 August 2009

Hungaria Cup Open 2, Middle (Day 3).

A very good run. Most of my problems were on the first control, and maybe attributable to the new start procedure and the fact that I was trying to get my map into the map bag most of the way to the first control.

Of course, this was an orange course (in US style) so I should expect to find it stupid easy.

Probably lost 45 seconds to one minute. Could have pushed a little harder but I did have a real race the next day.

WOC 2009 Hungaria Cup Day 30001

3/44, 14 seconds out of first and behind Shunsake Konno and Nobuhiro Nishio from the Japanese team.

Event: WOC 2009

This is what my long qualifier taping job did to the skin on my foot/ankle:

Run warm up/down 12:00 [2]
shoes: Inov-8 Mudlcaw 330 August 2009

With Eddie, to the start for the open 2 course.

Orienteering race 42:50 [4] *** 5.3 km (8:05 / km) +315m 6:14 / km
shoes: Inov-8 Mudlcaw 330 August 2009

Hungaria Cup, Open 2 course. Climb as measured on my route. An alternative route I considered later had 25 meters less. Advertised was 280 I think.

I had a very good run, on what I am beginning to consider stupidly easy terrain. (It was the same place as yesterday, although a different name: Bukkszentkereszt. It did have a piece tacked on the west edge.)

I had two small mistakes at the end. So, maybe 2 minutes total execution errors, and maybe 1 minute from sub-par route choice. Still, too much for terrain I was born for.

2/57 on the day, 2:30 behind Antonio Martinez from the Spanish team.
