I wrote a little routine to play the (Boris) word game. It took a little less than an hour, but it is semi-ineffective.

I spent most of the time trying to get a dictionary file. I felt a little dirty. It seems like most of the demand for these things are for password crackers.

So, I got one with about 55K words, but it also contained some proper names, which I had to strip out. Leaving me with 48,150, which isn't dense enough.

But, if I get a file with the right density, I should at least "guess" optimally. The interesting question would then become how and why will humans guess better/faster than my routine?

If I were to pick a word randomly from my dictionary, there is not reason a person would be faster than my perfect slicer algorithm? Is there? ESP? (Kidding... although I'm open to suggestions...)

I think I am going crazy. (My antics in Cristina's log notwithstanding. Those are mostly a consequence of being intellectually bored and separated from Dasha far too much. She is a stabilizing force.)

I am going crazy because I think Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, and Eminem are artists (of sorts.) Lady Gaga is Madonna's heir, though not equal. (Galton would have something to say about this, but I digress.) I think she is great. Not perfect, but certainly better than Camille Paglia regards her to be. (Camille, I think, may be feeling a bit constricted by her strenuous feminism, but what do I know?)

Katy unleashed "Teenage Dream" which I think out ironies Fountains of Wayne. It is just swimming in delicious irony (at least in my mind.)

And finally Eminem. While he can be distasteful, he came up with "Love the Way You Lie" which, to me, produces a new sort of contrapuntal power. There have been other male/female "duets" like that recently, but with Eminem, the percussive ferocity is something to behold.

After the awards dinner (9:30ish) I drove to Rye, NY, to the MS global hedge fund event.

The last one I attended was here. This one was at the Hilton Rye Town Hotel. I know this was to show penitence and all, but with the ceiling almost falling on me and meetings in hastily converted bedrooms, this was really farce. I hope everyone appreciated the irony as much as I did.

Anyway, no training.

Survived the trip back on Air Gregorchuk from Gaithersburg. Which is fortunate, so NAOC 2012 is still a go.


Given the weather yesterday, survival was not a foregone conclusion. Luckily Scott did not continue on to NYC. He would have ended up in Kansas.

I actually used lunchtime to run. Which was nice.

Level 8, and 9mph at the end.

I'm in OK shape right now, somehow. Not great, but good enough that it is a disgrace to put forth "efforts" like Sunday's.

I do seem to have sustained a groin/lower abdominal strain. Not surprising--it has happened before when I've started to do some faster running. It is noticeable sometimes at night, when sleeping on my stomach.

Have to try to get over that.

Set off and it started raining. Which was fine, but then there was lightning. I got to the BU Bridge and decided to seek refuge among the tall buildings of Cambridgeport. Wandered around through there, then over the Mass Ave bridge, by the Science Museum, and back out to the Longfellow and back home.

HR Blue.

The royal chainik defeated me soundly.

A number of things conspired against me: inadequate sleep over the past week or so, a lot on my mind (mostly NAOC 2012), too much activity the day and night before, and lack of racing recently meant that my body and mind were feeble.

So, Colgan could get in my head and blow it up. It was like an opportunistic infection that wouldn't at all bother a healthy individual.

Bailed after 2, but went towards three so I could get out to the road and do a jog and slink back into the camp unnoticed.

It does suck that the HR weekend ended on such a low note.

Stopped by Loch Lomond on the way home.

My plan B for the finish arena didn't pan out. So, it is back to plan A, but there could be plans C and D.

A large pile of bear scat in the likely event arena area (down by the pond and bathrooms.)

This race will require a lot of time in the woods this fall and winter before I'll even know exactly where we should map.

It would be really nice if we could mow sections of the Loch Lomond fields... for W/Y trails and the arena.

Actually, pretty good. I think we lost 3.5-4 minutes on #3 and some on #6, which was bogus anyway due to bad mapping.

Since I decided to push it on the way back, I will log this one separately.

The improved playlist obviously helped a lot. I wonder if I could objectively measure the efficacy of a given song? The new Eminem seemed to provide a boost (as did Training Montage, which happily coincided with the start of this segment.)

I will continue to improve upon this. A little Foo Fighters is next to be added.

Level 8 hills. Back up to my baseline speed from last year, and last 8 at 8. Also, accelerate for last 4, to 10.5.

1,008 calories. There could be some hope for the fall yet. Still, not likely to be fast, but will be able to negotiate hills.

The key thing, of course, is to be able to maintain a sufficient level of training. And that requires fighting the man and keeping my ankle intact.
