Cross Training 20:00 [2]

There were no towels, which really dampens my inclination to train in the gym, because I don't want to dampen others with my dampness.

Run 45:00 [2]

Sunday Sep 26, 2010 #

I wrote a little routine to play the (Boris) word game. It took a little less than an hour, but it is semi-ineffective.

I spent most of the time trying to get a dictionary file. I felt a little dirty. It seems like most of the demand for these things are for password crackers.

So, I got one with about 55K words, but it also contained some proper names, which I had to strip out. Leaving me with 48,150, which isn't dense enough.

But, if I get a file with the right density, I should at least "guess" optimally. The interesting question would then become how and why will humans guess better/faster than my routine?

If I were to pick a word randomly from my dictionary, there is not reason a person would be faster than my perfect slicer algorithm? Is there? ESP? (Kidding... although I'm open to suggestions...)

22nd Annual Lake Winnipesaukee Relay (CSU)?

I think I am going crazy. (My antics in Cristina's log notwithstanding. Those are mostly a consequence of being intellectually bored and separated from Dasha far too much. She is a stabilizing force.)

I am going crazy because I think Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, and Eminem are artists (of sorts.) Lady Gaga is Madonna's heir, though not equal. (Galton would have something to say about this, but I digress.) I think she is great. Not perfect, but certainly better than Camille Paglia regards her to be. (Camille, I think, may be feeling a bit constricted by her strenuous feminism, but what do I know?)

Katy unleashed "Teenage Dream" which I think out ironies Fountains of Wayne. It is just swimming in delicious irony (at least in my mind.)

And finally Eminem. While he can be distasteful, he came up with "Love the Way You Lie" which, to me, produces a new sort of contrapuntal power. There have been other male/female "duets" like that recently, but with Eminem, the percussive ferocity is something to behold.

Run 30:00 [2]

Late to TNT. By 7PM, it was already too dark to go into the woods, but I did anyway. Briefly.

Wednesday Sep 22, 2010 #

After the drive back from Rye, I stopped and procured a burrito, in honor of Ian. It was large and tasty.

While I cannot compete with his A-game, I can enjoy my amateurish consumption.

Cross Training 30:00 [2]

Back from Rye, and stopped at the Y.

Weight training 10:00 [3]

Dips, abs, and pull-ups.

The Phillies close out the series.

Rowing Machine 30:00 [2]

Easy, at 20 spms.

Tuesday Sep 21, 2010 #

Run 1:00:00 [2]

Easy running.

Monday Sep 20, 2010 #

After the awards dinner (9:30ish) I drove to Rye, NY, to the MS global hedge fund event.

The last one I attended was here. This one was at the Hilton Rye Town Hotel. I know this was to show penitence and all, but with the ceiling almost falling on me and meetings in hastily converted bedrooms, this was really farce. I hope everyone appreciated the irony as much as I did.

Anyway, no training.

2 PM

Hike 3:00:00 [1]
shoes: GoLite Versa Lite

Mostly at LL. Back and forth. Easy effort, but some climbing.

Not map, but I had a compass.

Arena is fetching. The forest is intimidating.

Saturday Sep 18, 2010 #

Cross Training 40:00 [3]

600 calories.

Level something, on the Precor.

Weight training 8:00 [3]

Dips and pullups, to exhaustion.

Sandy and I went to the mountain. The final piece is on the board.

Friday Sep 17, 2010 #

Survived the trip back on Air Gregorchuk from Gaithersburg. Which is fortunate, so NAOC 2012 is still a go.

Given the weather yesterday, survival was not a foregone conclusion. Luckily Scott did not continue on to NYC. He would have ended up in Kansas.

Thursday Sep 16, 2010 #

Run 1:35:00 [2]
shoes: GoLite Versa Lite

It was still light enough and I got in a longish run at Ridley, past the park office, etc.

Wednesday Sep 15, 2010 #

Oh, yes--Unibroue makes me happy.

Run 40:00 [2]
shoes: Saucony Progrid Ride 11/9/2009

I actually used lunchtime to run. Which was nice.

Level 8, and 9mph at the end.

I'm in OK shape right now, somehow. Not great, but good enough that it is a disgrace to put forth "efforts" like Sunday's.

I do seem to have sustained a groin/lower abdominal strain. Not surprising--it has happened before when I've started to do some faster running. It is noticeable sometimes at night, when sleeping on my stomach.

Have to try to get over that.

Tuesday Sep 14, 2010 #

Weight training 5:00 [3]

3 x 8 dips, 2 x 8 pullups, and some situps and pushups after the run.
7 PM

Run 1:00:00 [2]

A solid level 2. Stopped off at the plaground to do some weightes.

Monday Sep 13, 2010 #

7 PM

Run 1:00:00 intensity: (40:00 @2) + (20:00 @3)
shoes: Reebok Bobby Curtis

Set off and it started raining. Which was fine, but then there was lightning. I got to the BU Bridge and decided to seek refuge among the tall buildings of Cambridgeport. Wandered around through there, then over the Mass Ave bridge, by the Science Museum, and back out to the Longfellow and back home.

Sunday Sep 12, 2010 #

Run 10:00 [2]

Warmup and some drills.

Orienteering race 20:00 [3]
shoes: August 2009 Integrators

HR Blue.

The royal chainik defeated me soundly.

A number of things conspired against me: inadequate sleep over the past week or so, a lot on my mind (mostly NAOC 2012), too much activity the day and night before, and lack of racing recently meant that my body and mind were feeble.

So, Colgan could get in my head and blow it up. It was like an opportunistic infection that wouldn't at all bother a healthy individual.

Bailed after 2, but went towards three so I could get out to the road and do a jog and slink back into the camp unnoticed.

It does suck that the HR weekend ended on such a low note.

Map hike 1:00:00 [1]

Stopped by Loch Lomond on the way home.

My plan B for the finish arena didn't pan out. So, it is back to plan A, but there could be plans C and D.

A large pile of bear scat in the likely event arena area (down by the pond and bathrooms.)

This race will require a lot of time in the woods this fall and winter before I'll even know exactly where we should map.

It would be really nice if we could mow sections of the Loch Lomond fields... for W/Y trails and the arena.

Maybe this is what did me in?

Didn't cause Vadim any problems, though.

Run intervals 3:00 [4]
shoes: Salomon SpeedCross 2 2009

Some 100 meter pace count exercises, on the road and in the woods.

35 and 40, respectively.

Orienteering 15:00 [3]
shoes: Salomon SpeedCross 2 2009

Compass and pace exercise. Was spiking everything until the long leg. Off a bit on that, and a bit shaky for the rest.

Run intervals 2:00 [4]
shoes: Salomon SpeedCross 2 2009

The running portion of a map memory relay.

Orienteering 30:00 [2]
shoes: Salomon SpeedCross 2 2009

Ran three loops of the contour only exercise.

Map hike 15:00 [1]

Picked up some contour-only controls and streamers.

Map hike 45:00 [1]
shoes: Salomon SpeedCross 2 2009

Streamering and vetting for the HR sprint.

Started regretting I didn't have an ISSOM map.

Courses are good and done.
7 AM

Map Hike/Run 1:05:00 intensity: (30:00 @1) + (25:00 @2) + (10:00 @3)
shoes: Salomon SpeedCross 2 2009

Hanging controls and streamers for the contour exercise at HR. This is the time spent moving.

Mind and legs were sharp.
9 PM

Orienteering 47:00 intensity: (15:00 @1) + (32:00 @2) 3.3 km (14:15 / km)
shoes: Salomon SpeedCross 2 2009

Advanced night-O with Dasha.

Actually, pretty good. I think we lost 3.5-4 minutes on #3 and some on #6, which was bogus anyway due to bad mapping.

Comparative advantage was violated here. Janet should not have done those courses.

Friday Sep 10, 2010 #

7 PM

Rowing Machine 45:00 [2] 9.94 km (4:32 / km)

Very steady 18-20 spms and even splits.

Thursday Sep 9, 2010 #

DVOA BOD meeting. Left Sandy's after 9:30 and then I had some work to finish. So no training, nothing.

BOD meeting was generally constructive, though not miraculous.

Wednesday Sep 8, 2010 #

The TNT grill:

7 PM

Run 1:03:00 intensity: (5:00 @1) + (15:00 @2) + (35:00 @3) + (8:00 @4)
shoes: Salomon SpeedCross 2 2009

TNT Media.

Everything I didn't have yesterday, had today. Some length and the "strength I need to believe." The darkness was prety beat, though.

Tuesday Sep 7, 2010 #

7 PM

Run 45:00 [2]
shoes: Salomon SpeedCross 2 2009

TNT. Got there late and it was pretty dark. Did 45 minutes easy, including an Indian Hill.

Monday Sep 6, 2010 #

Weight training 2:00 [3]

Stopped off at the playground to do 2 x (10 x dips, 8 x chin-pullups).
4 PM

Run 45:00 [2]
shoes: Saucony Progrid Ride 11/9/2009

Easy, out to Trader Joe's. The legs were really flat today.

I haven't been doing enough training to be able to handle two good efforts in a row...

Sunday Sep 5, 2010 #

Freshened the "Running" playlist. Pruned some Journey, U2, Live, and others. Added some Metallica, Nirvana, cheesy 80s soundtracks, rotated some trance, added one new Eminem.

Weight training 7:00 [3]

Pushups, situps, pullups.
6 PM

Run 45:23 [2] 5.85 mi (7:45 / mi)
shoes: Reebok Bobby Curtis

Cruised on the way out. Touched the boathouse in 45:23. (Didn't net out the stops.)
7 PM

Run 38:49 [4] 5.85 mi (6:38 / mi)
shoes: Reebok Bobby Curtis

Since I decided to push it on the way back, I will log this one separately.

The improved playlist obviously helped a lot. I wonder if I could objectively measure the efficacy of a given song? The new Eminem seemed to provide a boost (as did Training Montage, which happily coincided with the start of this segment.)

I will continue to improve upon this. A little Foo Fighters is next to be added.

(This time I did net out the stops, which came to 31 seconds.)

Run warm up/down 5:00 [1]
shoes: Reebok Bobby Curtis

Saturday Sep 4, 2010 #

Run 1:20:00 [2]
shoes: Reebok Bobby Curtis

Consistent run.

Friday Sep 3, 2010 #

11 PM

Bike 1:00:00 [2] 26.55 mi (2:16 / mi)

A chill bike ride which started at 12:15AM, but I am still consigning it to 9/3.

On the recumbent and the mileage is fishy.

Thursday Sep 2, 2010 #

Weight training 7:00 [3]

Arms, pushups, and situps.
8 PM

Run 1:00:00 intensity: (52:00 @2) + (4:00 @3) + (4:00 @4)
shoes: Reebok Bobby Curtis

Level 8 hills. Back up to my baseline speed from last year, and last 8 at 8. Also, accelerate for last 4, to 10.5.

1,008 calories. There could be some hope for the fall yet. Still, not likely to be fast, but will be able to negotiate hills.

The key thing, of course, is to be able to maintain a sufficient level of training. And that requires fighting the man and keeping my ankle intact.

Wednesday Sep 1, 2010 #

Weight training 5:00 [3]

pushups, situps.
7 PM

Run 1:00:00 intensity: (50:00 @2) + (6:00 @3) + (4:00 @4)
shoes: Reebok Bobby Curtis

Level 8 hills. Faster for the last 10.
