Tuesday Sep 26, 2006 #

Run 1:02:00 [2] 8.0 mi (7:45 / mi)
shoes: Adidas

TNT.

Ran almost entire thing with Jim except for a bit where this girl tried to play games with us.

Wyattitis in the left side was definitely noticeable.

22:30 out and about 23:00 back.

Monday Sep 25, 2006 #

Run 44:26 [2] 5.3 mi (8:23 / mi) +130m 7:47 / mi

warmup

Orienteering race 1:22:50 [4] **** 10.0 km (8:17 / km) +220m 7:28 / km

Classic course.

I sucked the first half and might have sucked the second half if the Romanian express hadn't rolled around.

Event: CNYO A meet

Run warm up/down 20:00 [1] 2.0 mi (10:00 / mi)
shoes: 9/2006 Integrators

Warmup before sprint

Orienteering race 12:00 [4] *** 1.8 km (6:40 / km) +70m 5:35 / km
shoes: 9/2006 Integrators

Middle sprint (they called it something else).

I stewed over this a bit on Saturday. Maybe I'll write more later.

Run warm up/down 10:00 [1] 1.0 mi (10:00 / mi)
shoes: 9/2006 Integrators

warmup before middle

Orienteering race 57:00 [4] **** 6.3 km (9:03 / km) +285m 7:23 / km
shoes: 9/2006 Integrators

"Middle distance."

Started first because I obviously finished last in the sprint. It was fun to start first.

Didn't help that I took about the most high resistance routes whenever possible.

Note

Looks like a low volume week. It is hard to get a decent for me (inadequate according to some) amount of training if I miss any days. This week, likely two.

And running in the dark every night is such a drag. Guess I got to get used to it...

Run 30:00 [2]
shoes: Reeboks

Ran around the soccer fields many, many times.

(TNT got moved off the track due to some gladiator sport occupying space...)

The grass was a nice alternative, though.

Run intervals 6:00 [4] 1.26 mi (4:46 / mi)

6 x 1 minute with 1 minute between

Straight-line intervals on the two soccer fields. It was getting pretty dark.

Run warm up/down 13:00 [2]

Between intervals and cooldown.

Flatter route. Same as last night.

Also some strides at end.

flatter loop. legs felt tired.

Map Hike/Run 1:00:00 [1] ****
shoes: New VJ Spikes

More sprint stuff. I'll take credit for 1 hour.

Note

So the SS Finals are over and I am pleased with the outcome. No real problems that I care about, and the winning times I expected (as opposed to the expected winning times) were achieved with the level of precision I will tolerate.

All the ancillary stuff worked very well. The national anthem was a welcome touch of class.

The competition was good, that's for sure.

I was still disappointed by the lack of Canadians, but Jon and the bona fide north of the border Romainian Nick represented well.

And, in general, more Canadians would have been redundant, anyway. No one can touch the HVO trio. They are too good.

Note

Left glute problem started around now.

Map Hike/Run 1:30:00 [1]
shoes: New VJ Spikes

Various sprint and model event tasks. Also did a fair bit of sawing, dragging, and tossing.

Actual time is longer, but I can take credit for this much.

Run warm up/down 20:00 [2]
shoes: New VJ Spikes

before farsta

Orienteering race 1:04:00 [3] 8.6 km (7:27 / km) +240m 6:32 / km
shoes: New VJ Spikes

Farsta.

A good race but with some issues here and there. I didn't feel like I was pushing hard or had good speed, but it was kind of rough going, so maybe that was the way things went.

Didn't capitalize on the pack running at first, as I didn't realize that the people I was running with (Vadim especially) were going exactly the same place. Never running a farsta, I didn't know how much forking to expect so I was very conservative.

In the bland stuff out of the start I was very tentative. I truly got lucky there, both times.

I did have some smaller issues in middle part of the loops, both times drifting fairly far off my rough bearings.

At the end, I was running with Eric, who then got ahead and made up some seconds on the final few controls, while barely staying ahead of Jon who was also narrowing the gap quickly.

Run warm up/down 20:00 [2]

Mostly on track. About 1:55 400's.

Run intervals 26:00 [3] 4.0 mi (6:30 / mi)
shoes: Adidas

4 x 1200 meter intervals.

Goal was first 400 at 110, second at 90, last at 80, with 400 meter recovery at around 2:00.

Generally fast on the first and slow on the last.

Run 43:15 [3] 5.7 mi (7:35 / mi)

Hilly route. Took it easy at first and didn't push the three hills, but I did on the way back.

Run 1:04:00 [2]
shoes: Adidas

TNT.

Ran with Jim.

We did 23:50 out (he tied his shoes) and I did 22:30 back (I ran with him almost the entire way, except that I accelerated at the end of the last hill to tempo speed.) He ran back in 23:19, so good job with the negative splits.

Note
(rest day)

Probably a rest day today in order to sleep. Weekends are no longer good opportunities for that, and if I do any training on a normal day, there isn't much time left.

Glad to see that Nick signed up for the sprint. While he is Romainian, he has redeemed the entire Canadian race in my eyes. Also, very nice that the HVO sprint triune will be there in full power. Now there will be a real battle.

Run 20:00 [2] 2.2 mi (9:05 / mi)
shoes: New VJ Spikes

Warmup

Orienteering race 11:36 [4] ***** 1.9 km (6:06 / km)
shoes: New VJ Spikes

Fatlands sprint.

A very technical sprint. Also, covered in stiltgrass and other unpleasant vegetation.

I went out fairly early, so not many good trails yet. Still, it didn't really slow me down.

Almost an excellent run, but lost ~40 seconds on a late control.

Was running pretty hard.

Run warm up/down 10:00 [1] 1.1 mi (9:06 / mi)

Note

Kind of bummed about the lack of interest in the SS Finals. This will definitely set the standard (of meets I’ve been involved in) for most man/woman hours expended per competitor. Between the course setters, vetters, Eric, Sandy, Valerie, etc… it seems like we are putting out a feast for a mouse. Of course, that doesn’t mean that things won’t go wrong, and nothing is perfect, but I wonder whether it would be better if we just threw it together in a weekend?

At this point, it seems like no more cajoling, shaming, or bribing will have an impact, so to avoid being ridiculous, I’ll give that up. Maybe I should have begged?

Of course, I am especially surprised by the lack of interest from Canada. I remember well the conversation we had in the parking lot at Pawtuckaway when we discussed the idea of DVOA hosting the SS finals. This particular weekend was identified explicitly as being the best possible one for the Canucks and us. Things change of course, and with Hammer injured and Patrick in the tundra, you can’t expect them to come. But nobody? (JonT doesn’t count as he is in DC.) I feel like the bait and switch was pulled somehow.

Run tempo 54:31 [3]
shoes: Adidas

TNT

Nice hard run to Ridley and back with Tom. Definitely started going faster than I intended because the legs started feeling good. As a result, some of it was level 4, but I will be conservative.

Run warm up/down 5:30 [2]

On the playing fields

Wednesday Sep 6, 2006 #

Run 29:00 [2] 3.9 mi (7:26 / mi)
shoes: Reeboks

Flatter route. Just 30 minutes as I was expecting Dan to show up and had to pick up Dasha.

Run 1:01:00 [2]

TNT. Just Sandy, Jim, and I.

Ran basically alone, down to the bridge.

Out in 23:31 and back in 23:17.

Very wet. Not quite dark.

Map hike 2:00:00 [1] ****
shoes: New VJ Spikes

Back at HR on a decidedly nicer day than last time. With the clearings beckoning in all their sun-dappled glory, it was a good time to be there.

Revisted all the controls for the final, checked some more corridors, and moved some streamers.

Then hung more streamers and moved some for the night-O. Those courses are now all done, and fairly decent, all things considered, for a night-O at HR. Basically, a brown at night.

The sprints (especially after discussing map corrections with Eric) are now mostly done. Or, I should same, I am 90% confident that they are done. The final may be a bit long (WT-wise). I just need to determine whether I care. If this was the US Champs or equivalent, I would do a lot more to try to achieve this. For the SS, I think I can tolerate some more imprecision. On the other hand, I think Emil or equivalent would have no problem coming in closer to 14... Also, none of the winning times for last year's sprints were Under 16, so maybe this is consistent with that. And it is fine sprint orienteering and a true test.

The first sprint will be much closer to 15 minutes I think.

Actual time there was 5:15 or so, but I can't log all of that. Some was just performing aesthetic evaluations of finish chute angles--clearly not "training"-worthy.

Orienteering 6:30 [5] *****
shoes: New VJ Spikes

Trying to hammer through the finals terrain to see how fast it can be. (Fast enough, I think.)

Stopped when I found Eric.

Orienteering 19:00 [3] **** 2.85 km (6:40 / km)
shoes: New VJ Spikes

Ran at a easy-moderate pace around the final course. Some small errors and some big route choice errors. I did it on a 1:10000 which was very difficult to read.

Event: QOC: Wheaton

Run 1:30:00 [3] 19.0 km (4:44 / km)
shoes: Adidas

Ran with Eddie. Nice run. 30 minutes or so on the road, then 45 or so on the sand, plus 15 or so on pavement.

Time includes cooldown at end.

We cruised out on the pavement. On the sand my blisters started to hurt and my legs ran out of juice and after 15 minutes Eddie pulled away. He did wait up for me for the last 15 minutes when my legs came back to life and the blisters became tolerable.

Afterwards, in the inimitable TNT tradition, we had sumptuous cooking from special celebrity guest chef Tom. Yesterday, it was creole creations from the real cajun conjurer Eddie himself.

Nothing beats TNT action.

Saturday Sep 2, 2006 #

Run 1:30:00 [3] 16.0 km (5:38 / km)
shoes: none

TNT hurricane edition.

Ran on the beach with Eddie, Greg, and Tom. Awesome. Really sublime time with sand and water sandblasting alternative sides of the face. Did develop some blisters on the very wet sand.
