Orienteering race 19:51 [4] *** 3.4 km (5:50 / km) +25m 5:38 / km
ahr:171 max:182 spiked:8/12c shoes: Integrators

DVOA Independence Day Sprint 1 at Ridley Creek. Had to get up at 4:45 to catch LIRR–>NJ Transit–>SEPTA, then be picked up by Wyatt and theDabbler, as no NYC Russians had interest in going.

The race went well; I only had one large mistake, at Control 4, and recovered promptly (others weren't so lucky). No route-choice errors, and I think the 33 points were exactly what my training deserves at this time.

Orienteering race 20:48 [4] *** 3.3 km (6:18 / km) +35m 5:59 / km

I thought I had a perfect run at the 2nd Sprint, except for The Yelling Man Incident, but then, three days later, I looked at the splits and realized to my horror how wrong I was with my route choice to Control 4. I did have a good run until then; a rare lead.

Orienteering race 27:37 [4] ** 4.1 km (6:44 / km) +50m 6:21 / km

The third Sprint was disappointing... the map was questionable, but then I am the Master of Saylor Park, i.e. multiple streams of conflicting information, so should have figured it out. Caught by Joe at Control 6, 5 minutes; could not quite keep up.

Note

Walked for 40 minutes in Corona Park in the morning. In the afternoon, 3+ hours in Mahnattan, about 48th to about 88th, through Central Park, stopping at the MOMA.

Easy running 25:41 [2] 4.8 km (5:21 / km) +44m 5:07 / km
shoes: Road Mizuno

From the Best Western in Flushing to Greg's and BorisGr's place in Kew Gardens.

Easy running 1:01:33 [2] 12.0 km (5:08 / km) +165m 4:48 / km
shoes: Road Mizuno

Ran 1.8-km loops in Forest Park with Greg, Boris, Zhyk, a guy I did not know called Sergiy, and Valeriy Doverov. About 3.5 loops with Boris, then my stomach started to hurt and Allison started to call (damn those cellular phones), so I fell behind and only did 5 loops. Measurements are from Greg's log.

On the way back to Boris and Greg's place from the loop course, the sun had just set. I was alone. The landscape transformed dramatically from only a few minutes ago; instead of middle-aged ladies walking dogs, the park was full of hungry-eyed gay people in singles and couples. I hurried my ass outta there.
