Running 59:00 [3]
shoes: new balance 1025

Tempo run at Mont Royal Park, time to decide whether I want to be a champion or a chumpion

Winter Training Plan Week 6/20
1/5 hours complete, 22.5/30 total, 22.5% complete
Another disappointing week. Compared to last week this week was more busy than crazy as I was trying to catch up on my project work. Will really need to step it up if I don't want my training to fall by the wayside with 3 overdrive weeks before returning home for Christmas.

Hockey/Skating 15:00 [3]

Best hockey game of the year, a hard-fought 1-1 tie (gave up the tying goal with only 1 minute left though). A really good team game and evenly matched.

Hockey/Skating 45:00 [2]

$2 Thursday shinny. I am paying the price a little bit for last week's bender weeknights and weekend camping trip. Have been super busy at school this week. Don't want to quit on myself or my training though, time to put up or shut up (or HTFU)

Note

Winter Training Program Week 5/20,
1.5/5 training hours, 21.5/25 total, 21.5% complete

Had a bit of a crazy week, probably spent more time drunk than productive and fell off the bandwagon a little bit. Disappointed in myself that I fell off the bandwagon a little bit and cost myself the chance to have 20 consecutive weeks of 5+ hours training/week. Will still try to make it to my total hour goal. Owe myself 1 long run (2 hrs) and 2 speed workouts (2*45 min)

Running 1:10:00 [2]
shoes: new balance 1025

Run on Mont Royal that ended up being more of an ineffective aborted long than any sort of good training.

Hockey/Skating 20:00 [4]

Finally did something to justify my position as 1st line center and break out of my 3 game pointless streak. Sniped one top corner while driving the net on a breakout to tie the game 2-2 with 10 minutes left. Unfortunately our team ran out of gas in the end giving up 2 quick goals and an empty netter to lose 5-2.

Running long 1:45:00 [2]
shoes: new balance 1025

Long run at Mont Royal. Brought a map, but don't think I can log this as orienteering training because I didn't plan any exercizes or anything. Just felt lethargic for some reason on this run and really had problems keeping myself moving forwards at times.

Note

Winter training program week 4/20, 5/5 hours this week, 20/20 total, 20% complete overall. I thought that by getting back into training seriously it would help with my focus issues, but have really had problems being mentally disciplined this week. I don't know if it is because I am feeling a bit overwhelmed with the new city and my project work or if it is because of the fading daylight which has been especially noticeable this year after spending all summer outside in the Arctic.

Running hills 1:15:00 [3]
shoes: new balance 1025

Hill training at Mont Royal. After my last hill training (3*2 hill sets) decided that I needed to do more hill reps as the workout wasn't gruelling enough. Did 3*3 hill reps this time and it was a much more effective workout. Almost didn't manage to drag myself out the front door today but was glad that I did. Felt strong and loose throughout the workout which I think is a good sign.

Basketball 40:00 [2]
shoes: New Balance 790

10 minutes warmup, 3*10 minute games at the Tomlinson Fieldhouse. Wasn't terribly effective but we were playing 4 on 4 halfcourt and there wasn't a lot of room out there.

Running intervals 12:02 [5] 4.0 km (3:01 / km)
shoes: New Balance 790

10*400m intervals at the Tomlinson Fieldhouse. Did 4 intervals in a 20 minute break between basketball games and did the other 6 intervals after. What a difference 3 weeks of effective training and new lightweight running shoes made! Shaved off 46s compared to Oct. 20 (the first day of my new training program). My target time was 72s per interval, and I was super happy to more or less achieve that. Found that I was able to avoid the 73s+ intervals for the most part when I hammered through the first turn (50m) and then tried to stay strong after around a 34s first lap compared to when I tried to run an even pacing and ran around a 36s first lap. Managed to stay loose, legs never got stiff on me at all during this workout.

Running 1:01:00 [3]
shoes: new balance 1025

Ran to drop off the cheque for the Mont Royal Score O, the guy lived on the other side of the mountain right by Summit Park in Westmount. The best part was when I was climbing up Mont Royal the second time and my legs were burning and I really wanted a quick rest at the top but instead I HTFU and hammered through the next 5 minutes or so. Felt a really satisfying burn and that is how you become lean and mean.

Running 12:00 [2]
shoes: La Sportiva Crosslite

To the Chalet on Mont Royal, right after breakfast so had some digestion problems.

Orienteering 1:34:24 [4]
shoes: La Sportiva Crosslite

Score-O on Mont Royal, 40 controls in all. Finished in 3rd place, a bit disappointed with this result. There were about 5 runners total of about similar running speed, 1st/2nd finished in 1:27, 4th in 1:36 and 5th in 1:38. Felt like my running speed and navigational execution were good enough for the win today, but my route choices cost me a fair amount of time. Had an inefficient route that left me with some extra distance at the end that the other runners I was out there with didn't have

Winter training program week 3/20. 5/5 on the week, 15/15 total, 15% complete

Running 22:00 [2]
shoes: La Sportiva Crosslite

to/from the map edge

Orienteering 39:11 [3] 6.1 km (6:25 / km)
shoes: La Sportiva Crosslite

Ran an orienteering course from the Ramblers OC blog on Mont-Royal Park. Wasn't too difficult, possible to make 5 min/km here (30 min would have been a pretty good time). Was cold, wet and misty. Was pretty slow with no o-flow today. Feet slipped out from under me and did a flying back flop on some wet bare rock about 12 minutes in, and was shaken up and never managed the same intensity afterwards.

Hockey/Skating 1:00:00 [3]

toonie thursday shinny, was pretty good today as there were only 8 players so it was 4 on 4. Was only taking it at about 60% or so, but had some plays where I turned on the jets. Practiced shooting as well as passing and 1 on 1 stickhandling/pokechecking with Andre, the best defenceman on our hockey team.

Note

Spent a bit of time trying to find some fast lightweight shoes for track workouts, but couldn't find them at the right price or in the right size. Ended up not doing my track workout tonight, but will reconfigure my week a little bit to make my training goal.

Running tempo 59:00 [3]
shoes: La Sportiva Crosslite

Just had one of those days where it took me 2 hours to motivate myself to get out of bed and train. Tempo run, a mix of trails and terrain. Was labouring a little bit for the first 25 minutes or so but felt strong after that and powered through until the end of my run.

Note
(rest day)

Well-earned rest day after 12 straight days of physical activity. Feel like a bit of a bum taking it, but my joints will probably thank me
