Orienteering race 29:30 [4] 2.2 km (13:25 / km) +20m 12:50 / km
shoes: New Balance 590

Western Canadians Sprint event. Worst race, suffered a complete mental breakdown and the worst sprint I have ever done in my life. Went well for the first 5 controls, was taking it fairly steady and was in control navigationally. On the 6th control, I made an incorrect assumption that an elephant trail was actually one of the minor trails marked on the map on my attack, so spent about 5 minutes running around with my head chopped off and never challenging my original assumption. Finally just followed someone and ended up at my 7th control. After finally getting the 6th control, it was a 10 minute control in a sprint race. Jogged in the rest of the race, not bothering to take a bearing back to 7 so losing 2 more minutes and really didn't care after that. Made a dramatic finish line celebration expressing my dislike with my performance.

Orienteering race 4:33 [5] 1.1 km (4:08 / km)
shoes: New Balance 590

Sprint Challenge Round 1, 3/5 15-20 seconds behind Magnus and Steven

Orienteering race 4:30 [5] 1.1 km (4:05 / km)
shoes: New Balance 590

Sprint Challenge Round 2. Finished 3/5 behind Geir and Bryan May but ahead of Graeme, but Geir mispunched so I was 2nd. However, the final round was cancelled due to thunderstorms

Orienteering race 2:58:30 [3] 9.0 km (19:50 / km) +440m 15:56 / km
shoes: Inov8 MudRoc

Western Canadians Long Event. Worse race. Ended up being more of a battle of me against the elements than the actual orienteering course. Course was super physical with a lot of running through tall grass and a ton of climb, and it was an absolute scorcher, must have been well above 35 degrees with the sun. Right from the get go I was felt tired and mentally unfocused. A 5 minute mistake on the first control let me know right away what type of day it would be. My orienteering was actually pretty decent in parts, but it seemed like I made an error about every 20 minutes or so. The first hour I was able to run slowly and work my way through the course fairly normally, the second hour I was becoming more and more tired and resorted to increasing amounts of walking, and in the third hour I was absolutely spent and beginning to feel the early affects of heat stroke so it was a struggle to make it out of the woods. One tricky 200m leg took me 20 minutes, and by the time I made it to the finish I was only able to move at a slow trudge with sitting down every minute or so and massive cramps.

Orienteering warm up/down 15:00 [2]

did the model map and warmup, felt good

Orienteering race 58:30 [4] 5.0 km (11:42 / km) +100m 10:38 / km

Western Canadians Middle. decently bad race. was doing alright up until 4/5 of the way through the race, and then at the 40 minute mark I had a concentration lapse during my attack of the 13th control and was unable to regroup. Lost 6 minutes and 2 places as a result. Finished 8/10, immediately behind Alaric and Ross but ahead of Steven and Thomas. Winning time was around 40 minutes, Bryan May

Note

Basic summary of my weekend: MATT + HEAT = SLOW + STUPID.
It was above plus 30 this weekend, extremely hot with the sun, and I was just not used to it as we had a cool June where it barely cracked above +20. I seem to be affected a lot worse than other people, and pretty much just orienteered like I did when I was 15 years old. My biggest problem was that I was unable to catch errors in their early stages and I was unable to deal with them when they occurred.

Orienteering race 45:08 [4] 7.1 km (6:21 / km)
shoes: New Saucony Trigon

Wednesday evening event at Hermitage Park. First place, which normally is no big deal (I have been winning these things routinely the last three years now) except I beat managed to beat Geir. It was only by 2 seconds, but it shows that he is human after all

Hiking 1:00:00 [1]

Went to a friends cabin in the foothills and did a bunch of hiking. Didn't really pick a good week to have a lazy week (last week), as I could have used it as fine tuning for Westerns

Orienteering race 1:16:40 [3] 7.4 km (10:22 / km)
shoes: Inov8 MudRoc

Orienteering at Wahstao, first real forest event of the year and quite subtle terrain. Fast running, but poor navigation throughout as I made a 7min mistake and several smaller mistakes and was never really sharp (over 15min total mistakes). Finished in 2nd place behind Geir (who did it in 51 minutes)

Orienteering 42:20 [3] 4.4 km (9:37 / km)
shoes: Inov8 MudRoc

Geir set a middle course on the White Earth map with 16 controls as a training afterwards and I jogged it and navigated decently, making less than 5 minutes of mistakes

Running 20:00 [1]
shoes: Inov8 MudRoc

warmup and cooldown jog between event sites (15 minutes)

Tennis 1:05:00 [2]

Match with my friend Scott. Lost 6-1, 6-2, 6-3. Good session. If it had been a best of 13, I would have won!

Running tempo 21:30 [4] 5.5 km (3:55 / km)
shoes: New Saucony Trigon

ran the usual circuit, made pretty good time up until the bridge, glad that I still have some speed

Running tempo 18:30 [2]
shoes: New Saucony Trigon

easy second half of the run

Running warm up/down 10:00 [2]
shoes: New Balance 590

5:00 warmup, 5:00 cool down

Running intervals 18:19 [5] 5.0 km (3:40 / km)
shoes: New Balance 590

got some sweet new shoes, lightweight and fast. Was going to do a 5km time trial but I didn't pace myself and don't have enough speed endurance right now, so sorta did intervals. Ran the first 55% or so (2750m) in 10:13, then did 3 intervals of around 750m each with 30-60s rest in between, splits 2:59, 2:35, 2:32

Note

Have to get up at 6:30 for my new summer job, so was too tired and lazy to really train the last couple of weeks. I now know for sure that I can do the Western Canadians this year, so I have 3 weeks to get back in shape. Still uncertain of my status for the Canadians this year though.
