Tiomila Leg 8 (morning mass start)
Gonna split this into 2 parts because it was as if it was 2 different races in one for me.

Before arena run through (first 19 controls/10km):
Started in the mass start which was sooo fun but made sure I didn’t kill myself at the start. Set off really well with no mistakes. Decked it on a barbed wire fence on my way to #3 and face planted the floor which was very embarrassing as I was leading the train I was in at this point. Only mistake in this whole section was a 1 or 2 min miss at #8 where the small group of people I’d been with got away from me.

After that it was then just me and another girl through the techy green bits but i was still going strong and not even feeling tired. There was a longer leg at #14 and she took a different route to me and I got in front of her (i know this cos she caught me up later lol).

Felt sooo good about this part of the race as after #8 i navigated basically by myself leading a few people here n there and then dropping them all the way until the run through.

Went through the run through and had done 10k in 77:05 on my watch and that works out at 7:43 min/ks so i’m pretty happy with that!!

After the run through:
Slightly missed the first one in the green but not too bad. This part of the area was so complex, covered in rock and contours and I seemed to be finding everyone else’s controls instead of mine. #21 took a good route but messed it up at the end.

Then #22 completely on my own and facked it finding the one near the clearing, knew where i was and still couldn’t get to mine for ages! Dropped way too low and was just kinda wandering around unsure where I was, eventually found it and the girl I was running with earlier caught me again here.

Lead her through #23, #24 and #25 and was running well for these but they weren’t as technical as the ones i’d messed up on.

Then back into the technical rocky hill and took a safe route to #26 but still managed to get sooo lost. Wandered around again, found the big clearing and relocated and then still took an age to get to where i needed to be.

Feeling mentally and physically a bit done in now and was just a crawl to the end but spiked #27 and then too far left on #28 but knew where I was as i’d been through that part before. Had actually re-overtaken the girl again after leaving her for another gaffle on #26 but i expected her to be miles ahead of me. She got ahead of me when I slightly missed #29 and then a man asked me where we were so i helped him and didn’t think i’d catch her again.

Ran quite hard to try catch back up and i was faster than her so got her just before the last control which made for a nervy sprint finish because i could hear her right behind me!

Think i lost about 20 mins in this part which is so bad oops. Would’ve been sub 2hrs without it! Pace completely dropped off with a 8:10, 13:49, 13:19 and an 11:36 which had ruined my overall min/ks ugh!

OVERALL (sorryyyy this is sooo long this write up haha):
Just gonna forget about the 2nd part because normally i would never even run 10k on a course so think my brain was just very tired and not thinking properly because it’s not used to concentrating on orienteering for so long.

Tiomila Junior Relay - set out in 63rd, came in 63rd.
Started controlled and made sure I spiked #1. Fought a lot through the green from the start kite but eventually reached the path and it was fine, good!

Lol. Then blew #2 and binned about 3/4 mins i’d say. Crossed the marsh and turned right, but there was no hill? so then i thought i must’ve ran too far so i turned back and did a loop, getting very confused. Then crossed the marsh in the exact same place, looked to my left, saw the hill, saw the control, crap! Had drifted right on my bearing and didn’t even realise so ran the wrong way, no wonder i didn’t find it haha. Dropped so many places here.

Then was behind a little train and followed for the next one absolutely busting my gut tryna catch up with the back of it. The next control the girls in front of the train went too far to the left but i stuck to my guns and spiked it, noice. Was then leading the train but quickly dropped them and was just picking off people in front of me on my own from then on.

Think I was running well through the terrain and was taking some good fast routes. Really enjoyed the end because I was ticking people off along the faster bit so was a good confidence boost. Such a good day!!

Also disappointed to not pull my team up to top 50 (the aim) but after the first radio control (about halfway, ~2.2k) i managed to pull us back up 15 positions from what i had lost. Fastest girl was about 31/32 mins and without my mistake I wouldn’t have been that far behind! More positives to take than negatives!

JK Relay, 2nd leg Women’s Trophy

wow. erm, dunno what to say tbh just blew every chance my team had to do well, honestly feel awful i am so so sorry Niamh and Charlotte.

Took like 10 mins or somet to #1 and then everyone else obvs overtook me and it was just a bit of a crawl round the course (rest was mostly fine other than #1, just felt so crapppp).
One of those days where it’s just like why do i even do this sport when i do shit runs like this when it matters most? I’m miles better than this (well i thought i was but evidently i’m not) so why did i let this happen today? Honestly so embarrassed and i think if i ran around blindfolded i could’ve found number 1 quicker ahaha.

Mentally a bit shite now because not only did i let myself down i let my team down massively. Haven’t felt this crap in a while because things had been going alright but had a bit of a moment after my race and then just tried to forget about it but now writing this it has hit me again ahhh. Hopefully this won’t be the start of another crash but kinda feels like it at the moment.

Sorry for the long write up, sorry for the shit performance, sorry sorry sorry.
