Orienteering race (SA 4.1 km) 2:02:09 [0] 7.76 km (15:44 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 Trail Talon 250

Cité-des-Jeunes

Short version:

I need to learn to read contours!

Long version:

On the bright side, the thunderstorms and rain held off and there was amazing scenery with many huge rock cliffs. Egress from 14 through the narrow gorge, looking up, way up at that imposing rock face, was a "highlight", really "gorge-ous". (All pathetic punny attempts aside, it really was spectacular)

Alas, almost everything else was a lowlight, including the low light provided by fogged up glasses every time I'd try to stop to read the map. Darn humidity and bad optical genes.

Much of today felt like one terrible leg after another. Rinse, repeat...

I remembered part of the map didn't have much detail other than contours -- but couldn't remember which part... and got thrown off by what I figured were big rock details but couldn't find them on the map... my bad.

For 7, I decided to go more or less straight and ignore the trails, figuring for sure they'd confuse me if I tried to pay much attention to them. GPS track shows this leg was going pretty well, until suddenly it wasn't... and it turned into a 37 minute leg. Stopped to chat and compare notes with someone else struggling to find it and we teamed up for a bit while searching for it, then came across several others on the short or long courses all wandering around looking for control #57.

9, no idea how I messed this one up so badly... seems so straightforward on the map as I sit here at the computer.

13 was a good one I guess, 2nd in the splits, 3 seconds slower than the fastest person for this leg. (and no I wasn't following them ;) ) My one and only brag of the day!

14, augh, another one not to write home about.

15, I was expecting nice open forest coming off the dotted path to provide good views into the terrain but instead found it fairly green, not much visibility after all. Went ok though.

17, I think a wee bit of detail was missing from the map, hit some nice green on the way to the road and crossed a knee-deep creek/water-filled ditch, a bit unexpected based on the map but that's ok, helped clean up my muddy pants before arriving back at civilization.

Glad this wasn't the last event of the season -- some hope of getting a better run in before the end of the year. But I do need to learn to read contours!

Note

RALF

First time running on a track since high school gym class. Also first time doing some speed rather than my usual plod.

Fun!

5 x 400m with some rest between each
then an extended rest while others kept going
4 x 400 m with some rest between each
then a rest followed by 1200m continuous at slower pace

Messed up the watch so stats are incomplete/lumped together... running time only:
400m x 1 at 04:45 pace
400m x 3 at 04:18 pace
400m x 3 at 04:12 pace
1200m at 05:17 pace (back to my usual plod)

Neat to experience what those faster paces feel like, but no way in heck can I maintain them for very long at this point. Something to work on!

Running (afternoon commute) 43:11 [0] 8.05 km (5:22 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel-Zaraca 4

19 degrees, mainly sunny

Stats include running time only. Exclude ~3-4 minute walk partway through.

Was dismayed during the run to see that my pace was an exceedingly sluggish 08:30. Felt a little slow today, but not *that* far off my normal ~05:30. Sigh. And on the final approach to home, I was surprised I had to add a little extra distance just to get to 5km -- but maybe my midway walking break was much longer than I thought.

Then I arrived home and realized my watch was displaying miles! Woopsie! So, that was a nice surprise!

Longest continuous running section was 2.5 kms at the very end, once past all the traffic signals.
