Orienteering race (LA) 2:49:39 [0] 14.59 km (11:38 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 Trail Talon 250

Shirley's Bay

I've been having an exercise deficit lately, and what better way to get exercise than an outing to [attempt to] orienteer on a beautiful day, and this is a relatively tame location with civilization on all sides -- so, decided to do the long advanced. Today's run was reminiscent of my COC long: Not many glamorous o-skillful moments, but a definite challenge of endurance and persistence!

Today's run, by the numbers:

- 8.4 km course length as the crow flies
- 14.6 km covered by me
- 2 hours and 49 minutes of o-fun (though perhaps a few of the minutes were not-s-o-fun)
- 759 calories burned (per watch)
- 20 long advanced participants
- 11 long advanced finishers (hope the other 9 are ok)
- 11th place out of the 11 finishers
- 1 bungled first leg (again... sheeeeeeeesh. really inexcusable this one especially. what.was.I.thinking.oh.wait.clearly.I.wasn't.thinking.at.all -- sigh!)
- 1 stop to assist a cute kid with his course (though I'm probably the last person who should be trying to "help" anyone else! ha!)
- 4 to 5 falls
- 1 fall landing on knee on rock (ouch)
- 1 deer seen bounding away (near 16)
- 1 lost spi water bottle (somewhere between 23 and 25)
- 2 beaten down fences found "the hard way"
- 3 instances of cursing out loud (don't worry, out of range of the kids)
- 3 instances of proclaiming "Hallelujah!" upon finding the control
- 4 times shoelaces needed re-tying (annoying... there must be a better way)
- 18.8 minutes spent on control 10 (finally attacked from the south end of the west fence and was en route to the control when others came by and confirmed it was that way)
- 1 branch in eye
- 1,093 branches that would have been in eye if hadn't been wearing glasses
- 2 quite scratched up arms despite wearing long sleeved shirt (no worries, all part of the adventure)
- 0 tears in pants/shirt (this shocks me actually! so.much.green)
- 3 instances of thinking "I love bushwacking and all, but really, I'm quite sure I've had enough swimming through green today to last until spring... of 2023"
- 2 instances of thinking maybe I should call it quits and/or thinking I'd never be able to finish before the 2pm cut-off
- 0 instances of thinking maybe I should have stayed home and watched tv all day instead
- 9 splits within top 6 (excluding #27 which was significantly assisted by goat path)
- 1 happy wannabe-orienteer who would gladly do it all over again... just maybe with a better first leg please...

Running (RALF) 28:07 [0] 5.13 km (5:29 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel-Zaraca 4

RALF at Frank Ryan Park.

Felt sooooo sluggish in the warmup. The kind of day where if this had been a solo outing, I would surely have bailed early.

1) Tennis courts to corner x 3; 2.01 kms, 11 minutes

2) 1.1 km lap x 3 with 2-minute rest between; 05:55, 05:41, 05:32

Warmup/cooldown excluded from stats.
