Orienteering (rerun) 1:14:32 [4] ** 7.2 km (10:21 / km)
shoes: New Balance 479
Rerun of the Red at Webster from 2 weeks ago. Good workout.
Interesting workout. It didn't feel much like orienteering as I was replaying the event in my mind and thinking - was this best, should I try a new route to the control. [My goal was to go as fast as I could - no need to find a new route if my first try was optimal]
First error at 4 was better but not best. Due to more campers, I decided to stay right of the camp ground. I think running through it would shave some time.
To 7 was worse(!) First time I took the Eastern trail North and cut North when it turned West. This time I tried a North initially which looked like it might shave some time but did not.
8 was much better, not distracted by the open area south of the bit of land 8 is on.
11 was much better. I was 90% on the first time, but allowed myself to see the "other" corner of the pine forest first.
12 continues to give me good spirits - I was great first time and just as good the second.
16 was a bit better, but not as much as I would have liked. This is where my non-orienteering run came into play... Since I wasn't navigating as much as I would in an event, I was rather sloppy about it and then hesitant because I was less in touch with where I was...
Corrected my route to 17 well, and had a good run to 20. think fatigue may have played a role there the first time.
21 caught me again - to the other side... overcompensating for the miss the first time and I shot out a spur to the right.
Split analysis tells me I still have 6 minutes of lost time in the event, but I'm not sure I can muster the interest to do it again...
Two weeks later and the growth is quite full. I missed 2 in the field because the cut through from my first trip was obscured.
Great day to be out through.
