Running - Road / Track warm up/down (road, some grass) 12:56 [2] 1.76 mi (7:21 / mi) +33m 6:57 / mi
ahr:144 max:158 slept:7.2 (injured) (sick) shoes: VJ Twister (US size 10.5) - 3

I took a fairly brisk warm-up run before orienteering. My legs felt fairly good, and I had a pretty long stride. Not surprisingly, I had some left ankle pain immediately upon starting to run. Actually, it hurt while just walking before that.

Orienteering race (long distance) 1:30:18 intensity: (23:00 @2) + (1:00:18 @3) + (7:00 @4) *** 12.7 km (7:07 / km) +310m 6:20 / km

North American Long Distance Championships. A mostly good run but with a few minutes (3-5?) of mistakes. In contrast to yesterday, it felt fairly easy to stay focused on the navigation, and I mostly did a good job running smoothly, pacing myself, navigating carefully, and making good route choices. Also, at moments that I found my performance slipping, I worked really hard to bring it back up.

Under different circumstances, I might've been fairly pleased with this run, however it put me 9 seconds from achieving my goal of a medal at the North American Champs, so instead I'm feeling angry and sad, so much so that it was hard to bring myself to log this race. I think medalling (in at least one of the three events) was a very reasonable goal, but this was a sub-par weekend of racing for me, so it was not to be.

Why didn't I do better? It's hard to say. Probably improper or inadequate mental preparation played a part, but I also simply may be getting rusty or lazy in some aspects of my technique, and I know I had some critical lapses of focus that led to some lost time. My fitness could--as always--have been a bit better, but it seems to have been adequate to win races, had I done better on the navigation.

I didn't feel sick today, except that the lymph nodes in my neck are still swollen, and my resting heart rate is still elevated. My ankle felt fine this morning, after having hurt some last night starting fairly early in the run. It hurt again after racing today.

I slept in three or four stints, divided among my flights and layovers. I was routed Seattle=>Atlanta=>Detroit=>Binghamton, so there were lots of chances to catch a few winks.

Orienteering (control pick-up) 53:55 intensity: (13:55 @1) + (40:00 @2) *** 5.2 km (10:22 / km) +125m 9:15 / km
ahr:127 max:152 10c shoes: VJ Twister (US size 10.5) - 3

I picked up controls at night after ROC's Mendon Ponds score-O event. I took it easy and didn't feel too good, with some pain starting in my ankle almost immediately. I also got somewhat hypoglycemic after 20-30 minutes and felt really lethargic, but I rebounded a little later. I took some sub-optimal and round-about routes on a few controls, in order to avoid going through marsh or nasty vegetation.

After feeling somewhat better last night, my cold has had a bit of a resurgence, and my lymph nodes are more swollen again today. I also have a bit of a sinus headache, with painful pressure in my forehead when I lean over. I still have no itchiness, congestion or related symptoms. My ankle continues to hurt some when I twist the joint, bend it too much, or put too much load on it.

Running - Road / Track 4:30 intensity: (1:30 @2) + (3:00 @3) 0.45 mi (10:00 / mi) +5m 9:40 / mi

Running to the bus stop with my luggage to go to the airport.

I'm getting a sore throat this morning, I guess from one of the several ill people I've been around lately--bad timing.

Running - Trail / Grass (map run) 37:25 [2] ** 4.4 mi (8:30 / mi) +65m 8:08 / mi
ahr:141 max:155 shoes: Brooks Adrenaline GTS 8

I went for an easy map run around Magnuson from the office in the evening. My lymph nodes are pretty swollen and sore, but my legs felt pretty zippy, and my ankle barely hurt at all. I turned it outward once on a bumpy part of the trail (it was getting dark), and it didn't hurt a bit. I turned it again later, this time to the inside, and it did hurt some after that.
