Some brisk bits of walking during the U.S. Trail Orienteering Championships. The weather was pleasant--not too hot, and I did a good job of staying well-fueled and well-hydrated, as well as taking purposeful breaks in concentration, to preserve my best judgment.
I repeated as U.S. Champion. The course was at Riverside State Park, and it had a good variety of interesting and often challenging controls. On the other hand, there were several controls where I thought there were serious weaknesses in the map that made the answer ambiguous (at least to me). I missed one of those but made lucky educated guesses on the others (a couple of which were protested--one for a different reason--and thrown out).
As usual, Joe mopped the floor with me on the timed controls.
It was a lot of fun, and I greatly appreciate the immense amount of work that goes into organizing trail O events, in particular.
