This was AWFUL. I *hated* the steep terrain, and I never really connected with the map. I hit maybe three out of 17 controls cleanly. I would be embarrassed to post my tracks -- so I won't. :-P

At least my shoe choice worked better today (more traction). And that's probably the only positive thing I can say.

I like the Ultra-Long format, even though I move really slowly. It was hot, but I had plenty of water with me (and I grew up in Gulf Coast tropical heat, anyway). I didn't have any huge mistakes; but, looking at my tracks, I took some sub-par route choices. I usually don't think much about my shoes while I'm on a course, but today the shoes were a factor (not nearly enough traction on slippery pine straw and steep slopes). Also, the unsealed, thin map case was a pain in the ass.

I started off with a "bang" by making a 180-degree error from Start to #1. Sigh... A few other bobbles and dumb route choices. Not impressive.
