Orienteering race (8.4km 9.34 min/km) 1:18:26 [4] 7.0 km (11:12 / km) +190m 9:52 / km

Mount Penn, I was excited to run here again after a very enjoyable race last November. Drive was a little longer than I remembered, over two and a half hours, but worth it...

Pretty warm, around 80 and the sun appeared for a while, and quite humid. I sweated profusely and probably overheated. Was drenched at the finish and kept sweating for a long time afterwards. Running speed was definitely affected.

Navigation was OK, I missed the approach to #2 and lost two minutes. Route choice to #4 was questionable, in hindsight going straight north from 3 and then on paths and road would have been slightly shorter and 15 meters less vertical, I just saw the big fat road and went for it and failed to review route choice properly, 1 minute. Dropped slightly low to 9 and lost 5 meters vertical, 15 seconds.

Route choice to 11 was interesting, Several people went north on the trail system but that's 15 meters more vertical climb than my choice, and about the same distance. It's possible that following the contours close to the line would have been faster, saving about 25 meters vertical. Woods were open and pretty fast. Not sure.

My route choice to 13 was ridiculous, I decided, correctly I think, to avoid the thick green on the straight approach, and instead attacked from the path from the south. Getting to that path I made a big detour however, ran probably 150 extra meters going around on the path rather than straight through. 1 minute.

On way to 15 I thought 17 was my next control (tired and hot brain), 30 seconds.

4.5 to 5 minutes lost. I came in second, way behind AJ Riley and well ahead of Angelica Riley.

7 and 8 were almost the same controls as last November, and 11 and 17 were the same. Not that I remembered in the woods...

Great fun race, thank you DVOA!
