Orienteering race 1:40:04 [4] *** 5.1 km (19:37 / km) +105m 17:47 / km
18c shoes: Brooks Cascadia

First day of Interscholastics. Out here with my JROTC cadets. Texas is a different place to orienteer from Washington. Rundown on the race: Green A 5.1 km 105 meter climb 18 controls
control:
1-straight forward from start to attack point on trail bend. Control 150 meters off trail at gully intersection.
2- south from 1, get back on trail for 200 meters then to trail intersection/attack point into control
3-totally blew this one...tried to DR it but went too far west. Mistook hills and ridgeline, re-locate at powerline/trail intersection south of point (overshoot by 100 meters) then back up trail to re-attack. Stumbled on the point (Dumb luck) reset and go to 4...lost about 8 minutes floundering here.
4- follow trails to boundary, attack from south follow re-entrant down to control
5- long leg...fence line (hand rail) to fence corner, 45 right for 200 meters to wash going to mandatory crossing. Cross trail eastbound to follow handrail/gully to control.
6- turn south, cross 3 re-entrants to follow wash up to control
7-handrail fence line to re-entrant up to control
8- second long leg...follow fence to gully, north to ridgeline, east to control
9-DR to point through clear white forest, fast and clear
10- lost 2 minutes by going up parallel feature (Reentrant) to the south, turn north and found control easy
11-used terrain to find proper reentrant, another easy control
12-north to trail, follow trail for 500 meters, saw control from attack point/trail bend
13- lost a minute here, DR to point, should have used trail and closer attack point
14-follow gully to point, easy
15- follow trail to bend/bridge. attack straight north using gully as hand rail
16-DR through open field/forest, terrain rise/fall made finding this one easy
17-follow deer trail north to attack point just west of control, can see 18 & finish from here, run through brush to both.

After thoughts...don't forget to look for trails, you can't DR everthing.
Gaiters were an awesome invesment today...11 runners, no torn up shins, priceless.
