Orienteering race 53:39 [4] *** 4.32 km (12:25 / km)

West Point A-Meet - Middle Distance - I was probably most frustrated with this event, but I think it turned out to be the best result I had this weekend.

I am not sure if it was the fog, the featureless (relatively) area the start triangle was in, or not prepping with the compass, but I did not make it 100m in the first 3 minutes. I just couldn't get any kind of bearing on the map. I finally felt confident enough to move in one direction but wound up curling off to the right and hitting the road to the west. That at least helped by get in contact with the map again and I finally pulled into the first control 10 minutes after my start.

After that I was a bit more focused, felt at ease with the map, and nailed the next 4 controls. I had small bobbles on #6 and #7 and a bigger one on #9. I think I was literally 3 feet from the flag, but I didn't look over the edge of the cliff far enough. I circled around, losing about 2 minutes. Other than #1, the blip at #9 was the worst. No major issues the rest of the way out.

West Point A-Meet - Sprint - Nice course with a mix of open woods and building running. Too bad I had a MP. Actually though I was fairly happy with the run - most of it being clean and with what I thought was good speed.

The MP came probably, from being too focused on other runners and trying to pass. After have passed at least one R/B runner, I caught up to Karl Ahlswede at #9 and was thinking more about how to pass him than what my next control was. Unfortunately I skipped straight to #11 while he veered off to get #10. Funny thing was, he made it to #11 the same time I did. Went back and forth with Karl the rest of the way out and managed a strong sprint in to the finish.

Orienteering (Sprint) 19:45 [3] *** 2.6 km (7:36 / km)
spiked:9/11c shoes: PI Synchro Seek Trail

ROC Oatka Creek - After walking the white with the kids - I planned on only doing the sprint - so I went pretty hard. I also did not have any fatigue from running another course. Navigating went well until #7, where I was using a patch of light green to gauge where I was going to leave the trail and head for the control. Apparently the green area was larger and my catching feature behind the control wasn't much of a trail - so I overshot it by 100 m and stood at another control scratching my head for a few seconds. Quickly realized I overshot it, but I did not realize it was by that much. I never did see the trail.... Only other bobble was pulling up to soon at another control on my way into #11.

ROC Oatka - Orange 'Random-O' - 15 controls. The kids and Kameron were well occupied so I decided to go back out. I tried to avoid the controls to the south that were in the heavy green and would lead to long round-about trail runs. Three controls in, I thought I would switch to the green course and go after 20 controls, which lead to a some bad planning. I went after #21 after my route was leading me to #24 so I could get 20. Fortunately the rough open w/ green slash was not grown up yet and the running was not too bad - but it led me way out of the way. Did well navigating until #15 where I circled all the way around the control and was so far off that I had to go to #17 to get the control and relocate. Then I had a 90 degree error at a corner of two stone walls and added 400m to my run. Was going well from there until I rolled my ankle going into #11 and then decided to stick with Orange (although I did 16 controls).
