Australian Relays at Campbell's Creek.
Running first leg on M45A with John second and Graham third.
Very crowded at the start with a real bottleneck where the taped route to the start narrowed after about 50m. I wanted to take the little track N from the start but assumed that was where the crowd was going so thought it would be faster to cut through the bush a bit left of them. Found myself following some tapes which I think must have been marking the track although it didn't look like a track to me so I wasn't sure. Just aimed N to bounce off the big dam and got there a lot closer to the front than I had been. I thought I could see Andy up ahead so was pushing hard to try to stay vaguely in touch up the hill to 3 when Andy came past me from behind. Saw Carsten somewhere near 3 as well. 4 was a bit strange, couldn't see any knoll but found the control ok in the creek next to the spur. I could see Andy up ahead early on the way to 5 but by the time I got to the control they were long gone. Control seemed a bit low in the gully to me at 5 but that seems pretty standard for Victoria.
The next hill up to 6 was one too many for me so I walked most of that and got there as some of the junior boys started to come through, I think it was probably Ryan Gray near 6 and then Sam Woolford and Ethan Penck together on the track to 7. I managed to keep jogging most of the hills after that but it was a struggle. Only time loss was on 11 which seemed to be on the wrong end of the ditch (as usual it seems). I was confident about where I was so stayed left of the green rather than playing safe and heading into it to hit the erosion gully above but when I got to the ditch it wasn't very distinct so I went further N until I could see the creek beyond. Went down to make sure I could see the junction before coming back to the same spot. This time I followed it up through a bit of green and found the control at the bottom of the erosion gully. Lost about 1:20 there, the other 5 minutes was just lack of fitness. John and Graham had steady runs to bring us home 6th in a field of 10 teams.
I think this could have been a lot more fun if I was fit enough to stay in touch with the lead group. I really only saw Andy and Carsten briefly near 3. As soon as we went uphill a bit they were gone very quickly.

Australian Long Champs at Nuggety Range near Maldon.
Kind of looking forward to this one as I thought the terrain would suit me and be good fun but also aware that the climb and distance would probably be too much for me to be competitive.
Slightly shaky start on 1. I ran right over the end of the ditch on the way in so expected to see a mound on a small green spur in front of me and then go right to my mound but I could only see one big obvious mound right in front of me so hesitated a bit before looking on the other side of it and finding my control. Straight over the small and not very steep hill to 2 and it was immediately obvious that my initial assessment was right and it was going to be a struggle just to keep moving. Bruce came past on the way to 5 with Damian Enderby and said he was heading to 63 as if he expected me to tack on but there was no way I was going to lift to their speed. Trudged around the rest on my own without any real issues apart from a severe lack of fitness. Went right all the way to the road on the long leg and planned out conservative routes for the rest of the course anticipating fatigue induced lack of brain function by the end. Probably went a bit too conservative on the second last going right out to the fence bend and junction when I could have used the creek junction which turned out to be quite obvious and runnable. Just a little annoyed with myself for that because it pushed me just over the hour. Finished 5th behind Grant, Jon, Jock and Carsten which I think is the best that was possible for me on the day. A bit disappointing to just skirt around the edge of the rock. Would have been nice to have a bit more technical challenge.

Australian Sprint Champs at Salesian College Sunbury. 2nd in M50A.
Didn't put too much thought into this one, just picked up the map and ran the course. Felt like just a normal average sprint run. Pretty clean with a couple of little hesitations. On the leg to the map flip I didn't see the forbidden route crosses at first so had to slow and replan when I did notice them. Saw Carsten coming up the stairs out of the map flip as I was going down. He started 1 minute before me and I thought he seemed further ahead than that (he was). I did have a good split on the next leg as I was able to flip early and confidently head back up the stairs. Carsten made a small mistake later which allowed me to keep the gap to just 31 seconds in the end. Happy with that.
