Event: Peterdine

10 AM

Orienteering 48:39 intensity: (12 @2) + (2:00 @3) + (46:00 @4) + (27 @5) *** 8.08 km (6:01 / km) +209m 5:20 / km
ahr:151 max:173 shoes: Nike Free 3.0 V4

Did the H1 at Peterdine after checking that Steve had to do the same number of controls in the thomass event. Fairly late start after being dragged into helping in the caravan for a while and then walking around the VE with Liam and Amy. Most of the time Liam was almost out of sight because Amy was going so slowly but of course he had a bit of trouble at the furthest point on the course where a fence had fallen down and he went the wrong way for a while before ending up on the wrong side of the fence and needing help to get back across.

Planned to keep the heart rate under 150 again but by the time I switched the gps to a screen with hr displayed it was already 155 and I couldn't make myself slow down enough to get it back under 150 so I made 155 my limit instead and tried to think up excuses to justify it.
Ran a little wide on 2 trying to avoid climb and then a little distracted on 3 trying to plan my route but only a little inefficient, no significant time loss. Navigation was pretty good for the rest, just a little slow and safe on 116.
Did all the southern controls first (121, 122, 120, 118, 119, 117, 115, 116, 111) then wanted to avoid the steeper rockier sections so considered dropping the NE corner (108, 104, 101, 102) or the central bit (112, 114, 113, 110). Ended up dropping the NE corner because that had been my first instinct and was happy with that until I got to the NW corner and realised how far I had to go to get back to the thomass box exit at 4, don't think I had really considered that when planning. Still think my route was ok and not sure any of the alternatives would actually have been any faster.
Heart was mostly ok, had a few little hiccups at times but never any sustained arrhythmia. Pretty happy with how I coped physically, still felt pretty good at the end. Definitely still had a few more minutes up my sleeve but not sure I'll find enough to challenge fenry.

Easy run in KP with some drills and strides on the race track at the end. Beautiful morning and felt pretty good.

Must have been coincidence.

Felt like doing a flat run today so I headed down to the river and did a cut down MAF test. Not really sure if a heart rate of 140 means the same thing now that my resting heart rate has gone from 40 to 70 but it felt about right.
Much slower than before which was to be expected. I'd guess I'm in about 43 minute 10k shape at the moment which means I probably need about 15 minutes of navigational inefficiency from fenry to have any hope in the state champs.

Note

Second time in a week that my heart has been fine all afternoon. Connection or coincidence?
