Kingsley metro series. Started out to the NW along with Fletch, Ben, Graham and many others. Took the slower route to first control I think but not too much in it. Running down the middle of the path over the bridge between 8 and 13 reading my map I must have spotted something in my peripheral vision at the last second and reacted instinctively. Found myself vaulting over a waist high bollard without really knowing what was happening. Could have been ugly but the only damage was a big hole in the middle of my map.
Eventually overhauled Juffy on the way to 27 but was seriously concerned he would do the repass the way my heart was behaving. Fletch came past on the way to 20 after losing some time early but there was no way I could contemplate going with him and didn't see him again after 19 where I decided to do 25 before 21 just to be different. Ben also lost time early and came out just ahead of me at 24 after doing 21 and 25 in the opposite order but then he went to 23 which I skipped and I didn't see him again. Apparently he was on my tail after I picked up 6 but couldn't quite close the gap. Brian Hewitt overtook me several times, clearly running faster, but ended up over 3 minutes behind, not quite sure how. I had a bit of trouble towards the end first with not being able to see due to the sun and sweat in my eyes and then the big hole in my map between my last control and the finish but it all worked out ok in the end and I just managed to pip Oscar by 1 second and Ben by 5.
Generally felt crap because of my heart but enjoyed pushing hard to try to do the best I could regardless. Over 3 minutes behind Fletch but not much I could do about that with my current fitness so pretty happy with the result.
