orienteering 39:23 [5] *** 7.1 km (5:33 / km)
20c

PNWOF relay at Lava Butte, Bend OR. Pick-up team with Deb Hummiston and John Lee. We kicked butt! We were second in the open division and 3rd overall - just missing 1 and 2 by a couple of seconds when I couldn't beat Eric Bone in the chute. Pretty clean run except for #9, which lots of people had trouble with. I lost contact and drifted to the trail - attacked off a bend. I passed Eric there but he re-appeared at #12 and we spent the rest of the race trying to get away from each other. On the way to 13 he asked if we had passed Pam (we had - at #8). I punched just ahed of him at the spectator and managed to stay ahead for the next 2, but I went around the knoll the wrong way at 18 and he got a few steps ahead. I caught him up at the next control and we punched together. Downhill run to a trail handraill to the GO. Eric ran on the trail pulling away from me. I knew I had no chance to outrun him, so I cut off a dogleg in the trail through the forest and caught up to him! Still he managed to put about 3 steps on me from tehre to the GO, and sprinting for all I was worth in the sandy chute was only enough to keep pace.

orienteering 1:00:00 [1] *** 3.5 km (17:09 / km)

Jr Training camp with Rob and Matt. I was exhausted, so we walked everything! Did a collecting feature/route choice exercise for a few controls, then a short line-O section - noting everything that was mapped or un-mapped, and finally ran a few legs for pick-up (which I skipped :). The idea was to simulate what I normally do at a model event (tomorrow is the US champs model).

orienteering 14:22 [5] *** 2.8 km (5:08 / km)
15c

PNWOF Sprint at COCC, Bend, OR. Jumped out of the car after driving in from Crater Lake only to discover I was first start and had 10 mins to get dressed and to the line. No time for warm-up or bathroom. The E-unit fell off of control 12 when I punched. It took me at least 2 minutes to put it back on. :)

orienteering 1:00 [2] 1.0 km (1:00 / km)

A few mins of warm-up in the practice terrain.

orienteering 43:15 [5] *** 6.7 km (6:27 / km)
20c

Arnold Ice Cave, Bend OR. MIddle distance "chase" after the sprint. Lava rocks hidden under sage - de-laminated the soles from both of my O-shoes. Had to make a trip to waaa-mart to get shoe-goo so I could use them on the weekend (which worked!) 1 min error on #2 so Eric caught me there. We ran 3-7 splitting routes, and he was slowly pulling away from me. Halfway to 8 he pulled up saying he was feeling bad and walking in. Ran the rest alone. Decent run other than #2.

orienteering 1:30:00 [2] *** 5.5 km (16:22 / km)
13c

Jr. Training Camp at Arnold Ice Cave. Did a pace and bearing exercise with Rob and Matt, who had never used pacing before. First half was in the detailed area, then crossed over to the more open flat area. Easy running between controols, with lots of stopping for discussion. Picked up a couple of controls afterwards.

hiking 30:00 [2] 2.0 mi (15:00 / mi)

Down to the lakeshore and back up at Crater Lake - Cleetwood trail. Waded out to some rocks.

hiking 1:00:00 [2] 5.0 mi (12:00 / mi)

Hiked up Mt Scott on the E side of Crater Lake. Incredible views. Took lots of pictures. Climb was ~1200' I think.

trail run 58:26 [3] 5.0 mi (11:41 / mi)

Trail run out to Crater Peak in Crater Lake NP. The ranger at the north gate recommended this. It was fairly climby early and late, but flat in the middle. Best of all - no people!

hiking 3:00:00 [2] 13.0 mi (13:51 / mi)

Hiked up South Sister from Devil's Lake trailhead. Spectacular day. 3.5 hrs uphill, 2.5 downhill, 1 hr in the crater on top taking pictures. Not sure how much climb. Seemed like alot. The upper part was all cinders and loose soil. Emptied my shoes twice on the way up and three times on the way down.

hiking 2:30:00 [2] 7.0 mi (21:26 / mi)

After sleeping 4 hrs in the car someplace in the forest, 5 hrs hiking on Mt Hood. Climbed from Timberline lodge up as far as I could go without gear or skill (6000' to 9600' level). Distance a guess. Recording all of this week's hiking at half time.
