Oceania Championships Middle Distance
M40A
2nd place, 3 mins behind Neil Kerrison

This was a great area, with limestone karst terrain in open paddocks. But it was also very wet. This spoilt the race somewhat. With over 1200 people trying to run in the paddocks between the rocks, it became very slippery and almost impossible to run in places without putting yourself in extreme danger.

As the last starter of all classes, I had to ice skate around the course and somehow try to keep my feet. I really needed metal spikes, but there was a limit to the number of orienteering shoes that I could take on an overseas trip.

I lost time on the route choice to #5, climbing over the hill. I looked going around, but the side of the hill was too slippery to keep my feet. This was repeat on a few other legs too.
Neil had first start and probably had some better conditions for running.

Oceania Championships Relay
M35A
Fastest time, and 2nd team with Graham Braid and Blair Trewin

I started the third leg over 20 minutes behind NZ.
I ran ok, dueling with David Shepherd over the last half of the course on his M21 leg.

2017 Oceania Championships
Long Distance
1st in M40A
Rototoa - Woodhill forest (northern end)

This was quite different to the usual Woodhill dunes maps. There was quite a bit of low visibility forest early, and larger slopes with some sandstone cliffs. This was not unlike some pine forest in the Adelaide Hills. Later there were lots of complex contours, some in pine forest, and others in native forest.
Most of the field made lots of mistakes. My run was steady. Nothing fantastic, but no big errors. Somehow this was enough for a 7 minute win.

I was unsure heading to 5, so my tactic ended up pushing hard to hit the track and then coming back in. This probably only lost me between 30s to 1min, but saved 5 minutes of wandering around a vague slope.

Oceania Championship
Sprint Distance
M40A 1st

A good run on a great sprint course.
Change of speed was required, and some good decision making.
I made the wrong choice on 5, losing 10-15 seconds.
I missed a couple of turns in the portables, losing another 15 seconds on 21. You had to slow down in this part as the boardwalks were very slippery after a few showers and lots of muddy footprints.
