10 AM

Biking 35:00 [1] 9.0 km (3:53 / km)

Riding up to the far end of the map to start mapping. Mostly flat for the first half, then up two mile hill, a bit of flat through Takhini, and then up for another couple of kilometers.
11 AM

Mapping 6:18:38 intensity: (5:00:00 @0) + (1:18:38 @1) 10.44 km (36:15 / km) +167m 33:34 / km

First day of fieldwork on the Yukon College map. Generally pretty nice terrain, but started in an area with a lot of trails, right around a subdivisions tends to have that happen. Makes the map a bit of a mess, will probably end up going back to revise things. Still figuring out vegetation mapping up here too, very different plants/trees/shrubbery. Leaves are just starting to come out on deciduous plants, which makes mapping deciduous areas for leaf on of vegetation I don't really know rather challenging.

Mostly going pretty well though.
5 PM

Note

Short ride downhill to Red Squad from the map.
6 PM

Orienteering 1:04:54 [2] 5.88 km (11:03 / km) +127m 9:58 / km

"Red Squad" training on part of the Mount Mac map. Pretty green map, but very little deadfall so still lots of fun. It is really nice to run on a map that I didn't make, on a course that I didn't set.

Totally skipped #4, but otherwise had a pretty clean run. Got #4 on the way from #14 to #15, since I figured out what I had done at around #9.
8 PM

Biking 20:31 [1] 6.26 km (3:17 / km) +17m 3:14 / km

Ride back to Afan's.

If anyone want's access to my GPS of where I've been, it is restricted to "Just Friends" right now. Let me know if you want to get added to that list, since I have no idea who actually looks at my log and/or is interested in my session location data.

Orienteering 45:00 [1] 3.0 km (15:00 / km)

Checking out the intermediate training that Afan is putting on for his intermediate level adult group.

Area just south of the NAOC 2018 long arena, really nice terrain.

Note

Plan This Week:
- Monday: Finish some contour drawing around porter creek in the early morning, 7ish hours of fieldwork in that area, then "Red Squad" training on Mount Mac map
- Tuesday: Tidy up Monday drafting, more contour drafting, 5-6ish hours of fieldwork, Junior Program Coaching in evening
- Wednesday: Just mapping
- Thursday: Bunch of mapping, sprint race in downtown Whitehorse/Waterfront in the evening

Also need to get some scholarship applications done early this week, so whatever morning seems really cold/wet I'll probably do it then.
11 AM

Running 28:48 [3] 1.86 km (15:28 / km) +12m 15:00 / km

Thursday May 9, 2019 #

Note

Sitting in the Kelowna Airport waiting to board my flight for Whitehorse where I'll be mapping for the next couple of months!

I'll be back home to Salmon Arm on July 4th.

Hiking 2:27:21 intensity: (1:27:21 @0) + (1:00:00 @1) 8.45 km (17:26 / km) +305m 14:46 / km

Out hiking around the forested part of the Burnt Ida Bench map that I'll be doing in August, mostly investigating potential access points and parking/arenas locations. Some good news, some bad news. Also tracked a bunch of trails to start figuring out how good my hillshade/slope map is to try and get a bunch more of them in.

Picture from high up on the road looking across at the forested part of the map, and then over onto the Burnt Ida Bench part (that is some of the best terrain in the province)

GPS track not visible, because area might be used for a high level race.

Note

Out updating the BCOC 2018 map in Revelstoke today with a couple new bits of trail and a disease control cutblock. All the good terrain is still intact, just one steep sidehill got logged, only affecting one routechoice on the long, and not a single control site.

Mapping/exploring on the Burnt Ida Bench tomorrow, starting to collect some proper trail mapping for that mapping project later this summer (post COCs).

I'm hoping that the HPC hurries up and decides what to do with the WOC Sprint trials races, a lot of people out west cant' fix any events and/or dates until we know what's going on.
