Cyclones Summer Series #2 at Ferny Grove State High School. First orienteering for the year and was looking forward to a good challenge and practice. The course was fun and with quite intricate little paths and buildings there were times when you needed to be careful. Unfortunately the buildings don't make for terribly difficult route choice legs. One of the hardest challenges was following the course on the map since the printing wasn't great and the course zig-zagged like it was going out of fashion.

My technique was okay, I was reading the map better than at the ANU a few weeks ago. I had some slip-ups by fortunately they didn't cost much time. My flow could be better. Physically, I felt good before the start, thanks to a couple of days rest, and managed reasonable speed through the first 3/4 but started to find it difficult and flagged later in the course.

Orienteering 10:48 [3] 1.58 km (6:50 / km)

A nice little control-picking sprint exercise set by our visiting Swedish coach Ludvig. The map has many areas of light green and fences and all of these were uncrossable for the exercise, which, along with tricky control-placement, meant you had to take care to read the control descriptions and pick the best direction to approach the controls. I find reading the descriptions slow and a big disruption to my running rhythm. Afterwards Tim and I were discussing having handheld control descriptions so you could thumb the current item to make it faster.

Running tempo 29:47 [3] 6.1 km (4:53 / km) +35m 4:45 / km
shoes: Mizuno Wave Elixir 8

Commute from work to school. Tried to make it better training by doing alternating 800m @ 5km target pace ~3:30/km, 1200m at a steady ~4:00 (an over and under lactate threshold thing) but was confounded by a shoe-lace untying and then reaching my destination before completing the second 1200m. The fun was enhanced by a good soaking from the heavens about halfway through. I'd planned to add on some hill sprints once I'd got home but then life intervened.

Running intervals 48:28 [3] 9.2 km (5:16 / km) +60m 5:06 / km

Another 2 x (4 x 400m/200m) with a 400m between sets for specific endurance. The running over the weekend made this a slower session compared to the previous weekend when I had two days rest prior. Times were 3-5s slower, so more like target 5km pace than 3km pace, and max HR was 8 beats/min lower.
